Title: Southern Tek Meet
Post by: zpyder on August 20, 2009, 23:32:39 PM
So the rents are going away for a week at the end of the month, what better excuse to have a small Southern tek meet.

Sat 29th Aug - Any time after mid-day.
Location - My place, Ferndown (On the outskirts of Bournemouth, if coming from London/Southampton/Portsmouth way its just after Ringwood) BH22 if you want a rough idea!

Food wise I can provide nibbles, home made lasagne (or if people are feeling brave, home made chinese seafood curry), or there are several VERY good takeaways in the area. Theres also a good local 2 mins walk down the road. Theres booze (one of the few perks of having alcoholic parents), and of course a 360.

I cant offer anything like the epicness of a Samcrasher as obviously its the rents house, but last time (quite a few years ago!) this wasnt a problem, even if a teddybear was sent to the heavens by rocket.

Please let me know your thoughts and if youre interested in coming, it would be good to meet up with some of you guys, I think theres a couple of regulars that either werent around back last time, or couldnt make it. Weather permitting can always try and dig out the patio heater etc too.

Maybes/attendings:
Binary Shadow
Pete
Zpyder (hah)
Clocked
Beanissocoollike

Address details to be PMd out to confirmed attendees later on in the week.

As to gameage if the evening steers in that direction (ill add the rest of party games later, cant remember what I have right now):

360: - 2 controllers so if anyone wants to bring 2 more for some 4-player goodness.
Guitar hero 3 (more controllers/other Guitar heros needed!)
I appear to have traded in Mashed, but that was a classic, might try to find it somewhere if I can find out if its 360 compatible.
Halo1-3
Call of duty

Wii (2 controllers again so more needed!):
Wii sports
Wii play
Rayman Raving Rabbids 2
Warioware smooth moves
Mario party 8
Ghost Squad
House of the dead

Ohhh, I forgot to mention the wii ><

Other things doable:

Ubercake (my record is a quindectuple chocholate cake I think...(I dunno what the correct term is for 14 forms/kinds of chocolate!))
Sushi
(http://www.zpyder.co.uk/forums/sushi.jpg)

Obviously depending on what is decided, time will be needed to prepare :|

Its not something done lightly, believe me, its possible to have too much chocolate, one sliver of ubercake and you wont want to eat anything else for ages. Are you sure? Its been a few years since I did it so it could all go horribly wrong this time too...

From memory it had:

3x different chocolate sponge layers
3 different chocolate goulash layers
Chocolate flakes
Chocolate holly leaf mouldings
grated plain,dark,white chocolate
white chocolate drops
chocolate fingers
Chocolate fudge icing

The only burger buns worthy of any form of use are the buns you get from greasy spoon/burger vans. Ive yet to find a supermarket that sells buns of the same quality sadly.

I want to bury my face in your ubercake.

Tbh ubercake is on the cards so long as everyone coming actually wants it. And Ill cheat I think this time and rather than mess about with making the cake sponge, I think Ill just buy some pre-made chocolate sponge if I can find some, will give more time to sort out all the icing/goulash etc and everything else, otherwise Id just spend all day messing about with a cake, when people will have a few bites and then feel sick from how rich it is.

When I last did it it was for a small party from dive club, 12 people all had a bit, maybe only using up a quarter, and no one then wanted to eat the chinese that theyd ordered. That was fine by me as I got to keep the leftovers.

Still waiting for Bacon and Dogbert at the least to say whether theyre coming or not. I remember dogberts pingpong ball shaped uberrockets which rocket teddy was attached to. Im sure theres a picture or two and a video from the Bonfire tek party somewhere :(

Theres always the ultra unsociable option of DVDs, if anyone can suggest a classic.

I should say partners/spouses/mistresses welcome, so long as they can tolerate potential geekfestness in terms of people being unsociable and being huddled around a tv playing a console :D

I guess cake is on the menu then!

Edit:

Goulash? WTF was I thinking...Ganache!

Heh, Knighty and me alone in the house once everyone else leaves...should I be worried? :P :D

Bah, ok!

I didnt realise it was a bank holiday weekend until a few hours ago, and the forums were down for me!

More cake for the rest of us I guess.

Or is the cake a lie?

(I still have absolutely no idea what the deal is with that!)

Portal is free now?

Nah the cake isnt a lie, though Im slightly worried at what Ive gotten myself into, will have to wait and see what I come up with as I really dont want to have to make the cake sponges, but Ill have to if I cant find pre made ones. its no biggy though as I can do them on the Fri night after I finish work.

Really tempted to be evil and put one of the leftover Scotch bonnet chilli peppers into a section of cake :D

Sam looked into Mashed, apparently it doesnt work on the 360 sadly
Title: Re:Southern Tek Meet
Post by: zpyder on August 23, 2009, 00:00:06 AM
Yeah, bit lame :(

However I have got on order:

Raving Rabbids TV party
Some Wii Fit snowboarding game

And Scene it for the xbox. Provided people havent played it loads before and know the questions it should be good as a lot here are film boffs methinks :D

So theres a few diff party/group things available, if people have other things they want to bring theyre more than welcome. Deffo could do with a 2nd guitar for guitar hero tbh!

Tis shaping up to be quite a promising evening, shame Knighty couldnt make it, and have yet to hear from the likes of Dogbert. People are welcome to turn up any time after midday methinks, though I might be still working on the cake :|

I think Sweenster came to the last one too. Memories heh. Really need to dig out the photo from that, am sure its somewhere in one of my folders on my site.

I cant believe I triple booked myself....

a couple of years ago I forgot Id booked up a trip to India and also booked up for a rally across Europe thing... doh!

have another one..... and Ill come to that

the sad thing is.... because I work long hours during the week... Im always looking for interesting stuff to do on the weekends... and can never find anything !!!
Title: Re:Southern Tek Meet
Post by: zpyder on August 23, 2009, 00:12:09 AM
Tis a bit epic though, driving down for an evening! Mind you I guess I did the trip 3 times the other way ><

Depending on the success of the evening I guess something could be done later in the year or early next year. Itd be good to have a more central location so we could get lots of members together, being on the south coast is a bit limiting for many people!

Ill be unemployed again in December so will have lots of free time to maybe arrange something, though the rents will be at home. Am guessing no one here is up for a week in the lake district? I need a good walking buddy thats willing and able to do some of the high peaks :D

Title: Re:Southern Tek Meet
Post by: zpyder on August 26, 2009, 11:04:10 AM
Aye. I think also a problem is location. Sam was ideally located for Samcrashers, It seems most people are Midlands/North, with just a small fraction down south.

It was a spur of the moment thing too, found out the rents were going away and figured Id propose the meet. Itll still be awesome to meet Pete and BeanisSoCoolLike, and itll be good to catch up with Nige in person after what, 6 years since the last Samcrasher I was at?

Next time the rents book holiday a few months in advance Ill let everyone know haha.

It was short notice, but then look how much effort it always took from me and Sam canvassing to get people to the Samcrashers at times!

Im looking forward to meeting Pete and Binary Shadow too, its going to be good to catch up.

At least with fewer people you can relax a bit Chris  8-)

Am I allowed to bow out of the uber cake making? Seems like a lot of effort for 4-5 people, especially considering I doubt whatever is left will get eaten? Or will it been deemed wussing out of the challenge?

Also, Rayman tv party and Shaun White snowboarding arrived today. I wont open Rayman as those games always seem to be easy to master and half the fun is the novelty of the new challenges, best experienced in a group. Did have a go on Shaun White, quite good fun, if a bit easy/hard at the same time

You mentioned there was a couple of takeaways nearby, are they any good?
Title: Re:Southern Tek Meet
Post by: zpyder on August 27, 2009, 17:42:53 PM
Ive been undecided on the subject, was going to play it by ear, there will certainly be enough nibbles to feed a small ethiopian family for a year. However I am always up for a chinese.

And as to "Are they any good?" - One of them knew me by name and I had a "usual". Would call up and itd be a case of:

"Hi, is that Chris?" "Yeah" "The usual?" "yeah" "20 minutes" *click*

So yeah, pretty good :D Ive not actually used that one for a while though as a few others set up that are only slightly not as good, but still really good, but much cheaper with bigger portions :D

Well, back from Tescos. We now have representatives from maybe a bit over half the contestants from the confectionary wars, there is cake (albeit a pre-made one), doritos and dips, there will be cheese straws in a mo when I get round to making them, and as my father is a bit of an alcoholic, a crapload (seriously) of drink. The offer still stands for crashage here, if people want to drink and not drive. Originally I was going to kick people out in the morning, but that was before I realised it was a bank holiday. Now it doesnt matter :D
