Thats exactly the point I think, we can never really envisage what is behind the next corner no matter how hard we try.

Just before both World Wars our armed forces were suffering dramatic cutbacks due to the perceived lack of any belligerence from any nations despite what was so obviously the build up to a major conflict occurring elsewhere in the world.

Of course by that token you could argue that we should turn the nation into Fortress Britain "just in case" but I think its a historical point of note that simply underlines how you can never plan for the future and hindsight is never a wonderful thing in war. Hope for the best but stay prepared for the worst.

We do certainly need to get rid of our nuclear deterrent, but it needs to be done on a global scale with nations gradually reducing their own stockpiles.
