Wallpaper assistance
on: July 04, 2007, 12:18:02 PM
Right, so I have painted three walls in one of our bedrooms and have decided to wallpaper the one main wall.  I have bought wallpaper where you paste the wall first and then apply the paper.  I have also bought one of those plastic bendy wallpaper smoothers.

So ... do I cover the whole wall in paste and then apply the wallpaper sheet by sheet ... presumably using a plumbline working top to bottom.

Questions as follows

If the wallpaper is heavily patterned, should i work from the middle outwards? So basically apply a main pattern in the middle of wall then work towards each painted wall.  Or should i go from one side to the other? The property is an old cottage and therefore the two ends of the wall are not very straight (to say the least).

Secondly, would you paste the whole wall first, or paste each strip at a time?

Lastly, any other suggestions or tips would be appreciated.  Like if you wallpapered and remembered something that would assist.

Cheers all!

Ive never done patterned paper so I cannot help you there but I would say it is best to paste strip by strip. Hang it, brush it on and force the bubbles out.
When doing sinple paper I always start at whichever end is most visible and ensure that the first strip is hung straight and then follow on from there. The last strip/half strip will be hung on the least visible part of the wall and hence reduce/hide any obvious imperfections in the lines of the wall.

work from one side to another, so you only get one odd edge. follow the instructions on the packet of paste unless your using copydex.

plumb line the corners, see if either of them is square.

work from the corner most in the room, plumb line the first piece to make sure its square.

You should apply paste to paper, not to the wall first. Do it strip by strip, and usually you would work from one side to the other, not start at the center.

Thats what I thought although the paper I bought from B&Q states in big letters paper the wall, not the paper.

NO NO NO NO

Do not work from one side to the other. Work from the Middle & make sure the main Pattern/Print is in the centre of the wall.

Especailly as its one wall, I suspect its to be a feature.

If its a whole room, then start in the centre of your main wall.

if its feature paper its gonne be quite thick in which case you lose the benefits gained when pasting the paper. ie. paste the wall and the paper will still slide around dry as its quite thick.

Id start in one corner, but approx one sheet away from it if it isnt straight or plumb.

Id paste the paper and wait 5-10mins - hanging paper is so much easier when it has reached the OFP (optimum floppyness point). While waiting for the OFP I give the walls a coat of watered down paste to get them nice and slippy.

(my mum is a serial decorator but gets me to do everything)

Also, when you trim the paper after hanging do it roughly first and then cut it exactly with a sharp knife once its fully dried.
I know sh*ts bad right now with all that starving bullsh*t and the dust storms and we are running out of french fries and burrito coverings.

Egg is right, you cannot trust either side wall to be straight. Professionals start in the middle.

Get a bit of string with a weight on the end and start off with a line down the wall, half a sheet away from the centre Then paper outwards in both directions. This will give you an equal edge on both sides. By starting like this any drift in alignment will be less of a problem too than starting at one side. The issue of the paper in the corners not matching is only a problem if you have a distinctive pattern and are doing more than one wall. Surprisingly very few people notice.

As to putting the paste on I suggest doing it in one strip widths, if the wall is dry and bare then it will suck in the water from the paste and you will end up with problems.

TBH its much easier to do if you are using two complementary papers with a border along the centre but the above is simplest with a single paper.

So after all your very useful comments I succeeeded in the art of wallpapering.  Tis a piece of cake tbh.  It does have a pattern going across but not one that would call for me to start in the middle (i.e. the pattern repeats across two sheets).  So started at left end used a plumb line the vertically align the right side of the first sheet.  Pasted in strips.  Then worked my way across, the wallpaper bendy smoother is superb, as it immediately gets any bubbles out - my dad always used an old tea towel, but technology has obviously evolved.  Is still stuck this morning so thats always a good sign.  Looks fab and really chuffed given its the first time I have done it.

Thanks for all your help!  One happy customer!
