There's not much I'd change on that, does it have to be scotch or could you add Japanese, etc?

Also my favourite url parameter:
Code: [Select]
&hasdram=1

Glenfarclas 105 is nice but really it seems intended as a mixer being cask strength.

You can add Japanese, not many have &hasdram=1 though  I did find one and chuck it in, good shout

Nikka and Suntory are the two most prominent (Suntory also owns Jim Beam but I think does mostly blended whiskys). Nikka from the Barrel is affordable, as is Coffey Grain (which is like a bourbon) - there's some nice gift packs on the master of malt site.

All the Suntory ones are more expensive so I'd go with a nice bottle of Nikka which is a good way to get into them. Yoichi is also part of Nikka, so the Non Age that Matt picked would be great too (also not too expensive).

They do pre-arranged ones if you want a full on "surprise" but I'd rather fill it with hand picked Whisky I've definitely not had (with recommendations from a few whisky drinkers I know) Surely the "surprise" is in the taste!

It's not cheap though, the total cost of this advent calendar is £155.05  the flip side of this expense is several of them are ~£100 for a full bottle.

ok... I have no idea what I'm looking at... could either of you give me a link to which one to buy ?

price wise I'd probably aim under £100 but happy to go higher if it's nice stuff

thing is, he drinks whisky straight from the bottle... he's slowed down a bit now he's getting older, but will easily get through a bottle a week

fyi: he slowed down because a doctor asked him how much he drank, he said 3 or 4 bottle a week and the doctor asked him how long he'd been an alcoholic (he's not)

(so... he won't like anything 'poncy')

The from the barrell one I recommended is strong:
https://www.masterofmalt.com/whiskies/nikka-from-the-barrel-whisky/

Despite being relatively cheap literally everyone raves about the Nikka one above, I'd go for it.

If you want to spend a bit more this is well balanced (a lot of them can be quite smoky/peaty):
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Suntory-Hakushu-Distillers-Reserve-Single/dp/B0029ZEDZC

I honestly wouldn't spend much more than that because the rest of the Japanese whiskys tend to be rare and out of stock/discontinued, meaning if you can actually find a bottle somewhere the price has been artificially inflated massively, especially for the award winning ones.

That tasting set is a good sample actually, I might order it.

I'd be wary of doing a pre-selected advent calendar purely because I'm not a fan of smoky/peaty Islay type malts, I'm more of a Highlands/Speyside malt fan.

You could always get the £10,000 one  peaty or not, for £416 per dram you're gonna like it

I was actually pretty underwhelmed with Penderyn. Ive had 2 bottles in my time but happily finished them off without too much savoring as I've always found it unremarkable.

I love every Japanese whisky Ive tried, Nikka, Habbiki 12 and Yamasaki. They're all light and floral like great Speysides.

One of my new favorites is Balvenie 17, which was a surprise because I dont enjoy the doublewood at all.

Perhaps this all Japanese one should be on the agenda for Christmas 2017...

How about trying a decent tequila?
You will be surprised how good a decent one can be.
Maybe give Tequila Cazadores a try

This was the sh*t, and I'll be looking to do it again this year.

I made 3 piles with the little bottles

Less than 10 ended up in a reject pile.

"Worth another try" ended up with the lions share.

And the really good ones, I ended up getting 5/6 full sized bottles of whisky

For 2017 it'll likely be 50% of the same as last year, and 50% all new 8) Japan wasn't well represented last year, currently Hakushu 12 & Yamazaki 12 are in stock as drams, hopefully this remains the case in a few months.

Still think you should get at least one Tequilla :P

bit OT but I went on the Penderyn master class tour... free bar at the end of the tour.
It was quite good. Then a walk up the hill to a country pub for some proper pub grub & a few ales.
Then watched Wales v South Africa in a pub back in my home town. What a great day & night we had.

my whiskey drinking buddies really liked my Tequilla. Infact, more Tequilla was drunk than my Whiskey's.
