Personally, I think its pretty clear the best way to define it is anything above the Midlands is North, anything below is South, anything to the East is backwards and anything to the West is Wales (also backwards) ;D

Eagle's spot on. I live just west of London and I consider everything level with the North of London as South. Anything North of London is literally North. When I'm driving up the motorway and I see signs for "The North" then I know it's going to start get cold soon :o

I'm in the Midlands, and anything above the A27 is north tbh.
