Since I am excited by all this home brewing thats going on I have started looking into doing some winemaking. If i am sucessful I am hoping to achieve a sense or achievement and lots of cheap and tasty alcohol!
It seems this was more popular in the 70s and 80s than it is now, and thankfully my grandad has most of the things I will need.
I am going to need to find some yeast (winemaking variety) and a few other specialised additives to do various things to the wine.
Then I just have to decide what to make wine from. Apparently you can do it from just about anything. Ive heard damson and blackberry is nice, or find someone with grapes, or use parsnip, potato or nettle? Not sure yet.
Anyone ever do it?

Yea,
You want to start off making a few "kit" wines. Where everything comes in a box. Juice concentrate, Yeast, Additives, finnings, nutrients, etc.
Then go on from there.
Oh & pick up a book from Ebay.. One written by J.C.C.C Berry (somthing like that) is prob. the best one

That doesnt sound like as much fun! Plus I was hoping I could make some nice fruity wines that were quite different to the off-the-shelf ones.

I think I have that book somewhere, used it to get my quantities right for my sloe gin a few years back. Think it was my granddads, the price is in d :D

Some wines Ive tried that were homemade were slaughtered in quality by drinking my own piss. :)

Yes.
It comes with recipes as well.
Winemaking died a death because of costs compared to buying a bottle these days.
If your not going to do a kit wine (& your grandparents have made wine in the past) then Turbo Cider is a good start (its like a kit wine! Concentrated Juice). May also want to make a Mead, which is basically Wine made from Honey.

Its not really that much "Fun".
The making process dont take that long.
Making 1 Litre or 1 gallon. The only time difference is filling the demijohn with water. It doesnt brew any quicker just because your making more.
Ebay is a good place for brewing bits n bobs - just watch the postage charges though.
I bought a sh*t load of stuff form someone giving up for £30.
Had about a dozen Demijohns (theyre a fiver each), Filters, thermometers, Airlocks, Bungs, etc.
