Title: www.islandreefjob.com
Post by: zpyder on January 13, 2009, 12:28:56 PM
Figured Id post this here, but if anyone here applies, and actually defies the odds and gets the job, I will personally hunt you down and kill you  :yarr:

http://www.islandreefjob.com/

Basically a stupidly high paid "job" where you get $150k aus dollars for staying in a 3 bedroom luxury house in the great barrier reef for 6 months. The only "work" you have to do is maintain a blog/diary etc, as its basically a tourism campaign for the area.

I figured I might as well go for it, but as its a video application I dont hold much hopes, Im guessing theyre after a more media friendly persona.

However I figured I could play to my strengths and point out that as Im an ecologist and love the environment, and enjoy wildlife photography and filming, visitors to the blog would always have loads of info and photos of the area and wildlife, rather than be forced to watch videos about the person offered the job...

If anyone would care to help with any video or scripting please let me know. If I actually got the job, any helpers would be welcome to stay in one of the bedrooms in the house for a few weeks, and with the salary in question Id probably end up giving £1k to them too...(only if I get the job, if I dont you get nothing...nada...nil...!)

I was going to say, sounds like the area in which youre studying. youd be barmy not to with your experience!

Aye.

I think the difficult bit is though, that though Im an environmental kind of person, its only a small part of what the Aussy tourism people will want. I mean, you could be totally un-environment, but could be really good at blogging or doing a "rough guide" style website, and thats probably more what theyre looking for, rather than a wanna-be David Attenborough!

Will have to wait and see. Im guessing as its an international thing they will have thousands of entries so the odds are against even for getting through to the 50 shortlisted people!

(the above sounds pretty pessimistic, but Im actually optimistic about it to a degree, enough to put normal applications on hold as its a good break from the normal job applications to get out and do some video stuff!)

Hmm, one of my brothers lives in Western Australia, close enough I guess.

/applies immediately...

Yarr, all pirates on board! Get ready for them to try and repel boarders!!! :yarr:

You are better off not being too optimistic, there are probably going to be loads of people applying for that, from environmentalists to surfers.

Good luck and I hope you get it, bring me back some dubloons :ptu:

BTW that link doesnt work, crafty sod...  :disappointed:

And here I was, thinking you had used your 1337 hakzoring skillz to torpedo the thing so nobody else could apply.  :disappointed:

From what I remember, its a 3 bedroom house. Travel is totally paid for for yourself from any major city. Friends/family are allowed though there is a maximum (they didnt say what) and I think there is an allocation for 1 other person for the flight and travel stuff, everyone else would have to pay their way. I am guessing though that it would only really be the travel, once a friend gets to the house itd just be like crashing at a mates for a week or something?

Not so sure about putting it on youtube, but I may well host it up somewhere for all to rip to shreds. I tried going through a script a few times today to see how long it took to say.

Safe to say, I could never be an actor, I couldnt even get "Hi, Im Chris and I think I am ideal for the best job in the world because..." right!

At least Ive got the time to go out and try to get some good locations for backdrops...guess I better get my haircut tomorrow

OK, heres the informative pep talk...

On average most people underestimate their acting ability, although a few who cant act still get there because of good looks/right personality.

Just because someones acting ability isnt there doesnt mean they dont make good actors, in the right situation. Example, Firefly, most are good at acting, but have a close look at Jewel State when she gets shot early on in the series, it looks like shes pretending to be drunk, not wounded. Otherwise shes pretty much acting identical to Stargate: Atlantis. Effectively shes stuck as herself, but Im not complaining.

Acting ability isnt what its all about, especially on blogs. Its all about being yourself. Look at some of the keynote speeches made at conferences, these people almost all register a 0 on the acting ability scale. It doesnt matter because its the information they are giving thats key.

Most people who end up as models/actors have a low regard of themselves. Ive done training to rooms full of people, that isnt a problem to me, providing I have my material prepared and I know what I am doing. On the other hand I hate being videoed. IMO my voice is terrible on recordings, although my looks arent too bad.

Know what you are best/most comfortable with. I dont like doing presentations to groups without having prepared my material beforehand, I can and have done it, but it isnt right for me. Im really best on 1to1 training, where I excel. Thats not just me but the people who I have trained and other trainers. OTOH Ive also known people who are the reverse, they prefer large numbers of people, because its not personal for them.

So dont judge yourself through the floor before you start - simply because it can guarantee failure. If you fail once with that mindset it will reinforce itself and the next time it could be worse. Everyone is human, sometimes you are going to fail, even the greatest of us. Its not making minor mistakes that matters as much as recovering from them and learning.

Couple of suggestions. If you want a good video of yourself, get someone to do the video, once its running get the person to look at you directly. Then do your presentation to the person, not the camera. If you have positioned yourself well then you will always be in the cameras view. Eventually you might even stop thinking of the camera as such, its just someone whos going with you on your journey.

If you dont want yourself included then do the filming but staying silent. After you have accomplished that and you are back at base do the narration sound track. Now combine your vocal soundtrack with the actual one on the film. This is basically how they do major documentaries.

Well, just got back from a trip out to a nice rocky shore in the hopes of finding something interesting to film, not much luck, waterfall, bit of seaweed and 2 hermit crabs scrapping. But its only a minute long so I should be able to voice over it (Cams mic is too rubbish to have been able to talk in the vids so we have a few mins worth of stuff I can talk over)

The site is running again now as I think the initial rush has died down, theyve had 8000+ applications so far...

i dont think 8000+ applications is a lot given the publicity of this, then again 8000+ is a bit vague and it could well be much more than that.

on the camera part, i think they want people to be on the film itself, otherwise they could just ask for an audio recording? just my thoughts on it tho

Im on the footage, just not sat in front of the camera going "me me me"

yes i didnt mean sitting in front of the camera just spouting out words, but i meant i assume what they dont want is a disembodied voice speaking over some nice scenery, itll kinda be like an old 80s tourism video

Hehe, I know I didnt have a prayed so figured what the hey :D

I dont think the voting counts till they sort the 50 shortlisted candidates, till then its just there to make sure the voting works, I think everyone defaults to a 2...?
