If travelling north on M1, is it quicker at Rotherham to go slightly NE on M18 towards Doncaster, then join A1(M), and carry on north, rather than follow the M1 all the way through Leeds, to then join the A1(M) later? The first route looks more direct to me.

Yes its quicker, my satnav took me that way but in the other direction coming back from Alans last weekend.
-
yep.... its quicker...
but not by a massive amount... so if the junctions are busy etc.. I dont normally bother.... but if they dont look too bad I always go that way...
-
Depends when you do it, evenings getting from the M18 to the A1 you can get about a mile of stationary traffic on the M18 waiting to get onto th A1.
-
If I was on the M1 I would always just stay on the M1 until you get to the M1/A1 interchange. This is because the M1 is wider and you can go faster than the M18.

Well that is certainly a point of view. I remember the mental trauma I suffered when I stayed on the M1 once not knowing where it was going to end up in the dark :P I went the 1st route today and it was fine, any sense of satisfaction removed by the fifty million miles of average speed camera torture at 43 mph near Catterick.

Got those at Sheffield/Rotherham too.

theyve got signs for them along the roadworks.... but theyre fake
if they were real Id have lost my licence 50 times over by now !!!

Do not forget to watch out for mad lorry drivers around there. You may end up going for a ride.
