Future projects...Raspberry Pi / Arduino?

Watching ET last night, I came to a conclusion that in the future (don't know when) - I'd like to get back in to messing around with robotics. When I was 11 or 12 I made a latex "glove" cast of my hand (paint several layers of latex onto your hand, peel it off for a negative of your hand/fingerprints...even though it's inside out it's pretty realistic). I used pneumatic lego technic to create a skeleton framework inside the latex cast, that could be manually controlled via a few switches to make the hand crawl across the floor.
I was thinking it'd be pretty fun, if I had the time and money, to revisit that kind of project, but do it "properly". More movement, controlled electronically, and programmable?
I've never given much thought to them, but have heard Raspberry Pi and Arduino mentioned in passing. I know some of you guys have used Raspberry Pi's for media centres and the likes, and am curious how you found using them to be?
I imagine this kind of project would have the biggest challenge to me in the programming of one of these boards. Putting the thing together would be easy.
