GUIDE : Rivkid's Simple Subnetting!!
on: July 19, 2011, 23:30:22 PM
Ok - I was asked to write a simple explanation of subnetting for some guys at work last week and thought it might be a good guide for here. Its by no means definitive - I just wrote it quickly, and it does assume a certain understanding of IP addresses. I'm sure some of you (Mark for a kick off!) will know this stuff far far far better than me but this seems to have done the trick for my guys. Feel free to add and amend where you feel necessary - I'm a server guy really networking is more of a needs must for me!! :)

Hopefully it might be of use to some budding network engineers out there!!

I know sh*ts bad right now with all that starving bullsh*t and the dust storms and we are running out of french fries and burrito coverings.

So from 192.168.0.1 to 192.168.0.255 there will be groups of 30 addresses in their own 'networks' as it were?

Assuming the above example with a 255.255.255.0 mask then yeah thats basically it - although its important to understand that its technically groups of 32 addresses in total - 30 that can be allocated to hosts (pc's, laptops etc..), 1 thats the network address and one thats the broadcast address.

Theres actually a really superb subnet calculator on Warriors of the Internet that shows you exactly what the network numbers are and what the host ranges will be in a nice table:
