7D Batteries?
on: September 24, 2011, 17:05:09 PM
Looks like I'm going out in a bit to get a 7D from Jessops, as they have it at a good price of £1088 and will be an upgrade from my 500D which I have noticed on my recent holiday has quite a few stuck pixels :(

This means I need new memory cards, batteries and timed shutter remote..

Out of the 3 from previous experience batteries can be a bit hit or miss.. for those on here with the 7D which batteries do you have? On the 500D I have a couple of Canon and a couple of energiser...

With the Canon ones being over 50 quid a piece for the 7D are there any suggestions for cheaper brands? or is it just not worth the hassle?

Cheers guys

I got a spare 7D battery from my sister last christmas. Tbh they last a very long time. My experience of 3rd party batteries is even if they say they are the same/higher capacity, they never last as long in camera.

As a bit of guidance, a fully charged battery is meant to last ~800 shots according to some info I read somewhere (I think). When I do my photomicrography, using live view, and taking 20-50 photos per image (quite quickly mind), I tend to get around 1500 shots before needing to swap batteries.

Shooting in RAW, this means I will fill up my 16gb and 8gb memory card before I run out of charge on a single battery.

(I tend to fill the cards, and then swap battery after transferring images to my laptop, before carrying on. By the time I've filled the cards again and transferred to the laptop the 2nd battery is fully charged)

Hope that helps.

Cheers I'll probably get one spare to start off with, as I have a £50 voucher for John Lewis, so will cost me a fiver from there..

And keep an eye out for good offers, I wont need more than two for a while I expect anyway

Just how many photos do you take on an outing?!?!

LOL, it depends on what you class as an outing, I've just been on holiday for over a week :)

I take your point though, I normally have access to a charger of some point, two is probably plenty ;)

I guess it's true about holidays, but unless it's backpacking you can also take the charger as you say :)

What about lens rental places, seems like a logical idea for them to rent batteries for people going on safari etc?

Just to let you know, purchase complete, not ordered the extra battery for it yet though ;)

One comment, all the buttons are in the wrong place! The 500D was so much more user friendly!

Other than that, very happy with the purchase!

You get used to it pretty quickly tbh, and then it all makes sense.

I'll be interested to know what you think of noise, both the shutter sound and image grain at iso's higher than 200 :D

Shutter sound is a million times better, and in live view mode you can even make the shutter quieter!

I haven't had a chance to have a real play with it yet, but image noise was one of the things that made me change, the smaller body Canon's have quite bad noise levels even compared to the Nikon models.

Looking on the camera screen the noise does look better, but haven't viewed any images on the laptop yet..

I could do a few comparison shots if you wanted..

Quick Update..

Managed to get a Battery for a fiver (Well I had a 50 voucher for John Lewis that had been hanging around for about a year)

Also Loving the 7D, I haven't got round to doing the comparison of noise yet, however the metering seems to be much better than the 500D, much less over exposure and the levels just seem much nicer.

However some things take a little longer to setup.. On the 500 I could change most settings without removing from my face, the 7D just seems a bit more complicated, especially switching between AF points.

Also I wish they kept the rear screen settings screen (which you can bring up by Q menu) but it doesn't have the sensor above the screen to turn it off when you put it up to your face.

You can custom-setting the AF points.

I think I still have the default button mapped for choosing AF point modes (Eg, auto, point, pinpoint, group etc) But I enabled the joystick for moving the af points around without having to do anything else.

Other custom settings I have is I've set one of the rear buttons to AF-Lock next to AE-Lock so I can back-button focus. I think that's about it.

Ah that might be a good idea, I'll have a play tomorrow, I haven't looked at the custom buttons yet..
