A bit cold.
on: March 03, 2010, 23:31:49 PM
Monday went for a bit of a drive with my brother in the country, North east coast was clear but when we took the one lane road cross to Chillingham it ended up more than his Fiat Panda could realistically handle. The pics dont show how bad it ended up, the road was really only passable by 4 wheel drives. Had to turn around and go back. Just a couple of miles awat the roads and fields were clear of snow.

Not the main photographic issue though, for the first time Ive felt limited by my 28-135mm lens, the angle was just not wide enough. Thinking of getting either the Tamron 10-24mm or Tokina 12-24mm wide angle. Tokina is supposed to have better edge sharpness but the Tamrons wider and a lot cheaper.

Nice shots Serious,

Ive not used the Tamron lens, but the Tokina is a Tokina/Pentax collaboration. My Dad has the Pentax version which he uses for photogrametry. Its insanely sharp and has almost no distortion at any zoom setting. Fantastic lens, if rather pricey.

Read a few reviews on both, seems that the Tokina does indeed have the better sharpness but that is affected by putting a filter in front of the lens. There are also slight issues with distortion as you say.

Ended up getting the Tamron and saving the extra cash, arrived Thursday late on so not had much time to test it except for a couple of quick shots. It does look good though.

Ill be interested to know your thoughts on the Tammy once you get a chance to really play with it. I still harbour plans to get myself something in this range one day (though it wont be for a while!) and youre the first person Ive come across whos actually got a Tamron one.

Produced a rather nice panorama, problem was it ended up 17,195x2348 pixels, and something over 5MB as a Jpeg. Reduced it to 800x109.

Lens is quite interesting. Pretty much useless as a portrait lens but good enough as a 24mm group one.

The example photo was taken at 10mm on the 10-24mm. I havent altered in in any way except reduced size. Its something I could never have managed on my 28-135 lens simply because I couldnt get back far enough to get the tops of the trees in. I was with two of my 3 brothers on a photo outing, their cameras didnt manage to produce anything like this.

I would definitely consider it if you are after a wide angle, they are useful when you just cant step back any further but need to get more in. This one certainly works well enough for me and is much cheaper than the competition.

Feel free to download photies as they are bigger than they appear on my screen.

Finally managed to have a good play with the Tammy over the last couple of weeks, results are impressive for a relatively low priced lens. Ive seen people say its at least as good as the Canon equivalent and it certainly is. Point, zoom, press the button.

Its rather more useful that I first thought too, if you have enough of a picture available. Visited Haydon and photographed the old bridge from the new one. 28-135 couldnt get it all in, 10-24 did it easy.

Also went up on the Roman Wall near Crag Lough (please present me my idiot of the month award) and managed to get some good photies, but feel terrible.

One issue is its so wide at 10mm you occasionally get things in which you didnt even realise were there. Had to delete one cause a kid walked into the edge of the frame, wasnt important and couldnt be easily cropped.
