D60 Cashback question
on: June 09, 2008, 19:34:33 PM
I just purchased a Nikon D60 yesterday. On the Nikon website it says I must send off the original lens B sheet if I want to reclaim cashback but the salesman never completed it or stamped it. Is that going to be ok? I think I need to complete this myself and send it off.

So far Ive been really impressed with it though! Im just wondering what lenses Ill need for it, but Ill be getting these in USA anyway.

Does anyone have any recommendations for a good shoulder camera bag (not a backpack style)?

By the way does anyone think I should have paid the extra for a D80 because of the live view? I guess it can have its advantages of taking a photo where there is a lack of space.

Check out http://www.crumpler.co.uk/ for bags.

I bought one of their backpack style ones and its perfect for my laptop, camera body, small tripod, 3-4 lenses and other accessories.

Theyre not cheap but the quality and design is second to none imho.

no I dont, although I would have paid the extra to get a D80 because of the focus motor and better viewfinder. Since you already have the D60 it makes little odds now, the camera you have is capable of some amazing pictures and by the time you outgrow it there will doubtless be new and snazzy things to take the place of the D80.

I often look back and think ... perhaps I should have gone for that.

I think the extra money spent on the D60 over a D40 would have been better spent on a D80 (Although having said that, no point dwelling on it as you do now have a great camera! ).  Purely for the motor in the body and I do not think the extras on a D60 warrant the price increase from say a D40/x.  Having said that, the only time I have found the motor thing to be an issue is with a 50mm prime.  I argue with myself over that one as I actually find you have better control of where you are focusing by doing it manually as its got such a shallow DOF, but sometimes would be easier to have it manually do so.

As for lens, well you do already have the kit lens, so you could go for the 18-200, although that is a big and heft chunk of cash gone.
I personally would go for these

Nikon 55-200 Zoom AFS VR (£130ish)
Sigma 10-20 Wide Angle (£225ish order from One Stop Digital, takes 3 days from Hong Kong, but they are a reputable company)
50mm prime (£60ish) or you could go 30mm if you have to have autofocus (£200 though ... eek!)
70, 105 or 150 Sigma Macro lens.

Think that would do you

I have all but the zoom as I bought a Sigma 70-300 APO DG Macro/Zoom lens, which only cost £80.  Its manual focus, with can be a pain but only if you are trying to take moving subjects.  I have had very good results from it.
