Another which camera thread + where from?
on: April 18, 2009, 19:52:43 PM
Just got back from my jollies in italy and concluded that while the GFs nikon p&s has done a pretty good job considering it is probably 5+ years old, its probably time for an upgrade.

Not going to go dSLR as I know I wouldnt make proper use of it at this point in time.

Variously considering Canon G9/G10 or SX100, Lumix LX3, or anything else comparable people might suggest. Lumix do seem to get good write-ups but there seems to millions of models so cant really work what I should be going for.

Basic criteria are pretty portable (not going to take a separate camera bag everywhere with me), good zoom, and sufficent functionality for me to teach myself a bit about photography in case I ever get round to actually buying a dSLR.

Finally, suggestions as to best places to buy from would be appreciated (amazon etc fine, jessops price-match useful, just wondering if there are any specialist camera places out there that might provide a good deal).

I think in terms of "Where from" it often ends up just being a case of looking around. Seems different cameras are different prices all over, and there is no one good place which is cheap all round. I mean, I got my Olympus bash/water/cold proof camera from Play of all places. I got my DSLR from Jessops in store as I got them to price match a PC World camera price!

dont know where you are in the world, but SRS microsystems in Watford have always given me great service and their prices are pretty good too (at least on Pentax DSLR equipment, but I imagine they are pretty ok across the board).

Lx3 has had great reviews, G10 has also been recived well but of the two I would (and have) look at the lx3

[edit]
just noticed you said good zoom, that would knock the lx3 out as it short on the telephoto end of its zoom at 60mm in favor of a fast and very wide end at 24mm
