What kind of underwater work are you intending on doing?

Unless youre planning on going professional, Id suggest a compact camera, rather than slr, for diving. You can get quite good deals on compacts + housings which usually cost a fair bit less than just the housing for the SLR. Combined with the fiddlyness of the SLR, and the risk of it flooding and taking the camera out Id say its not worth the hassle, unless you intend on doing underwater photography professionally.

Yeh, annoyingly DSLR housings seem to be £800+ so im going to have to buy a decent compact and a housing as well as a DSLR. Dont want to miss out on the underwater photos when im in the Maldives later this year. The olympus compacts that are waterproof as standard tend to only go to 3-10m depth which isnt really enough for proper diving.

Currently looking at a Lumix DMC-FX35 with DMW-MCFX35 underwater housing for about £300 all in, then a low end Canon or Nikon dslr to pair it with.

Looks alright.

I cant fault my Olympus 1030sw (10m underwater camera) - for snorkelling or a 6m dive under a pier its quite handy. Though at the same time it feels really weird to be using it without a housing.

It might be worth going to one of the london/brum dive shows if it fits with your time scales. Usually one of the big sectors at the shows are the cameras and housings, with some pretty good deals to be had where they sell the combo at a good discount. The websites of the specialist underwater camera/photography shops have similar deals, but are usually just a tad less good.

Looks like Ive missed that one, London is in March, im off in October.

Cheers for the tip though. I looked at the Olympus but 10m just isnt enough.

I think the Birmingham show is maybe August. Dont hold me to that though, its been a few years since I last went :D

Also, you can get a housing for the Olympus 1030sw to allow it to go to 40m. Ive not really had much issue with the quality of pictures from it, even though some reviews have said that you can get better pics from other cams for the money. I guess this might be true, but the quality is good enough that you might only notice if you took identical pictures with diff cameras and compared the end result. The selling point of the cam is that it is small and tough, allowing you to take it places and use it where and when youd least expect to, and not have to worry about damage.

I know I am probably starting to sound like a fan-boy or something, but I really do enjoy the toughness of the camera. Its nice and small, and is very handy to have around for those moments you least expect to need a camera, especially occasions such as being out walking and coming across a waterfall, or something interesting in a pond etc. As its a sealed unit (bar the ports if you open them) - its also good for beaches and boats etc, no need to worry about sand getting into any mechanisms. Might be worth considering for the maldives. Handy to be able to bung in your beach shorts and not worry about sand, impacts, or getting it wet if you go for a swim or snorkle. Then when you go diving, put it in the housing. Id imagine if the housing floods, its toughness might help double up the protection so all is not lost at the surface!

Sorry to interrupt your my thread :P

Ordered last night and eBuyer have already dispatched even though I selected super saver delivery! Woo!

Ordered from their in the end as they were the only reputable place to have it at a good price, there were a couple of other places doing it for less but wouldnt trust them with my money!

Hopefully my flat mate will wake his lazy arse up and answer the door when delivered ;)

Now back to underwater photography...

May be a tad late but just reading about the Underwater options you have listed.

Ive done alot of Diving since being in Australia and met alot of people who are diving with Cameras and the #1 choice so far with people and instructors seems to be the  Olympus 1030 SW with underwater housing. The main reason is that its easy to use and because its already 10m waterproof it has alot of quick access underwater point & shoot options which work well.
