yes I wasnt meaning you should get a D40 now, just that if it sells well and certain high street stores stop pricing it above models which have better features then the other OEMs are sure to follow suit and we will have a nice little price war over budget line DSLRs again.

soon enough youll be able to get a DSLR body for £200 or so, and if youre very lucky that will coincide with the time you out-grow the fuji. Assuming of course that you ever do, you may find it suits you well in which case why upgrade. Serious takes some seriously good shots with his FZ-20 and obviously feels no inclination to buy a DSLR.

5 million pixels is still the sweet spot in small camera sensor chips, even with the makers trying to push 10 megapixels. TBH after six you end up with noise coming in at an earlier point and that requires extra processing which defeats the point to some extent at least.

Present day prosumer SLRs will probably handle 10 megapixels without a problem but for higher they are going to have to move towards full size sensors.

I agree completely, and I heard the other day about a 12MPix sensor for compact cameras. Its just pointless, even if you can get the noise to a usable level the lenses just arent up to that kind of spatial resolution.
