Canon 6D announced
on: September 17, 2012, 13:42:15 PM
So, Canon has released a "budget" full frame SLR, the 6D. Supposedly it's placed between the 5D and 7D. It is price wise, but having a 7D, I just don't think it's tempting enough to warrant an upgrade. Anyone else got thoughts on this?

The 2 +'s I can think of are better IQ (better ISO range) and the ability to use a phone as a remote control complete with live view.

On the downside, I lose the magnification from the 1.6 crop factor (bad for my wildlife photography), less focal points, slower fps, £800 more than the 7D, EF-S lenses won't work, and probably several other points I can't think of right now.

For one wait until the price drops :)

Secondly how much more is the 5d, I know the mkII was only a couple of hundred more? Is the mkIII that much more expensive?

I first heard about it through Wex photographic, that had a comparison table including price:
  • 7D - £1080
  • 6D - £1800
  • 5D - £2750

I think those were the prices anyway, give or take £100 or so. I honestly don't think the 6D has that "wow factor" that the 7D has. Too many of the 7D perks are missing on the 6D to justify the jump, I'd much rather get a second hand 5D for not much more tbh...

Blimey! the old 5d mkII was about a grand less than that last time I looked, but I guess that had been around for a few years, I also think the 7d at that price was an import, was nearly 1200 when I got mine. Sounds like some nice gimmic features to fill the gap in the market that canon created, will have a proper look when I'm back in the uk and not on my phone.

Those are Wex's prices for the cameras, it's 5D MkIII (not II)

I don't know if the 7D would be an import at that price, I only paid £1100 2 years ago for mine and it was a UK camera, I think prices just fluctuate a bit and sometimes you get good deals and others not so much!

As usual I reckon it depends on what you're shooting

If for example you're a wedding 'tog with a 5D as your main camera (as a lot seem to have, good balance between size and capabilities), you might well get yourself a 6D as a backup body to keep in the car in case the 5D fails at an awkward moment.

Alternatively if you're a landscape guy or a portrait guy, the fast focus isn't important to you and the crop factor is a pain in the backside but the added DOF control and increased MP over the 7D might well be worth it.

If I were you, I'd stick with the 7D.

Don't worry, I'm going to :D

Wedding wise, if you could risk leaving the 6D alone, I guess it'd be cool to be able to control it via wifi to get sneaky candid shots. It'd almost be like a 2nd photographer without the photographer :D

I've also since seen that Canon has announced the Powershot S110, which also has the wifi control option :D

Yeah sorry I meant that I was surprised in the price difference in the mkII and the mkIII :)

The remote shooting does sound cool, but for a few quid you could just use a remote shutter release ;) I know it's not got the nerd factor but it does look like the 6d is filling the gap where the mkII used to sit, that didn't exist until the mkIII came out (almost like canon created the gap to be able to sell a new range)

You could also use a wireless grip addon, but at £500 it actually puts the 7D+grip at the same kind of price as the 6D.

I already use a wireless remote, but the nerd factor of being able to see on a phone the live view, as well as instant transfer to a computer/server, is indeed cool.

I've made $1 so far this month in stock photography. At this rate I'll be able to get the 6D when I'm 193 :D

Haha, just had a proper look through the specs, and it does look like a good camera, surprised at using SD cards only! Better for your pocket but rendering your 7ds CF cards useless :-)

However does have the silent shooting found on the mkIII, although the 7d has it in live view mode, and the ISO handling looks like its going to be similar to the mkIII which is pretty awesome.

TBH I just want a mkIII but couldn't justify it as a hobby camera especially as I haven't used the 7 much recently, I even left it at home while on holiday in favour of my much lighter 500d and a single lens :|

How does the silent shooting work, I assumed it was the same as 7D in the sense that it flips the mirror up and then you only get the quieter second curtain click, and faster fps?

I guess if I somehow had the money next year I could be tempted, ish, as the plan is to travel and do Canada/America/NZ. Would be good for that but not sure I'd want to take all my gear with me!

Kind of off topic, but I was recommended this shop in Brighton today, they look awesome for 2nd hand bodies. All have a 6 month warranty.

Dpreview have a good article on it, I believe it just slows the shutter when not using live view, I think down to 3fps
