Change of temp cam issue?
on: October 16, 2012, 20:54:06 PM
Twice now I have had issues with my 7D and EF 100-400 L lens.

It seems to occur when I get the camera out of the bag in cold ish weather, not as cold as its going to get though.

So far I have only had it when using high speed shooting.

The camera locks up, sometimes the aperture is closed (dark viewfinder) or the mirror is up (black viewfinder) and I get Err on the LCD, also has an error on the main screen reporting issue with lens communication and to clean the contacts.

Its clean.

Anyway, its very annoying but luckily it seems to clear after a while and I can carry on, I missed a bunch of photos at the BSB on Sunday, very annoying, I even re mounted the lens on the body but it didn't help, just had to wait and eventually it was ok again.

Any one else had similar issues with their kit?

I think next time it happens I'll change to single shot mode and see if the slower shooting helps, or even throw a different lens on to see if its the body or the lens causing the issue.

Can't say I've had anything like that but I do know that changing temperatures quickly can cause some problems, usually in causing condensation inside the lens, suppose some condensation forming on the contacts would certainly interfere with it and might cause that some of a problem.

If you can't get to the bottom of whats causing it might be an idea to give a canon service centre a ring and see if they'll give out some idea of what's causing it over the phone.

Yeah i dont think its condense causing this tbh as there was no dampness when i pulled the lens off to try and clear the issue.

I have just updated the firmware to 2.0.3 from 1.2.5 to try and rule out other issues that may be causing this problem.

I've had 2 issues with my camera.

#1
Cold weather (very cold). We were doing scrub clearance and I was trying to photograph it all. I'd not had the camera for long, but for some reason the autofocus points were constantly engaged and flickering around. It was weird and quite disconcerting. I partly put it down to user error (I could have gone to single point focus) but not sure if I tried that and it wouldn't let me. It was fine though once back in the warm.

I've had a few incidents in the last 24 months where there's been a lens contact issue, though I've assumed I'd just put the lens on in a rush and maybe had got a bit of dust or something on a contact. I just removed and put the lens back and it was fine. It wasn't in particularly cold or hot/wet weather either.

Given the weight of the 100-400 I'd imagine it'd be more susceptible to slightly not-right attachment to the body. Plus with the all metal housing it'd likely be more susceptible to temperature changes etc?

maybe try another lens to make sure its not a camera/lens combo?
Think maybe with so much metal - cold metal from the lens its also making the camera that bit colder?
