Thing is though, Im looking at the lenses and not knowing what I need.. Id like them all if I could! :D I have to keep the budget of the body with 1 lens strictly below 500. Just bought a car so Ive got all the costs of that.. Then I can buy another lens at a later date.

In that case then I suggest a small telephoto lens camera bundle. Being stuck with a lens that has only one trick is a pain in the arse, you will however want more zoom so will end up spending a nice amount of money on another lens soon after.

A dSLR doesnt just stop at the purchase of the body, like I said, mateybob of mine has paid more than the camera itself to get his lenses. They are the price of a compact digital camera pretty much.

Right, cheers! :) Ill have a look around then!

I think Ive decided on the Canon EOS 350D. It turns out this is the camera I used when I went camping with friends during the summer. I had a good go with it and it was fantastic :)

The canon 18-55 may not be the best lens ever produced but its totally adequate for most photographic situations, effectively its a 28-90mm zoom equivalent due to the smaller than 35mm sensor. A 55-200 would give you a good range of options with only two lenses. This is what my brother ended up with and is very happy with.

Serious is quite right, 55-200 is a great mid tele zoom range on the 1.5/1.6x crop DSLRs. My *ist came with 18-55 and 50-200 lenses and when Im traveling light they are more than enough.

Beware all this "pixel count" stuff.  Generally, its horse-sh*t.  Marketing hype designed to fool teh no0blar.

Image quality depends on the quality of the image processing software in the camera - not just the pixel count.

Buy a camera with the pixels stated as actual.  Avoid interpolated or effective pixels - meaning that the camera takes the image and enlarges it before writing to the card.  And, as we all know, you lose quality when you enlarge a digital image.

good advice eagle, but no current DSLR uses interpolation to boost its marketing numbers.

The advice still stands though, if it comes down to a choice between a 6mp DSLR with a better lens or a 10mp with a cheap lens, Id take the 6 every time.

The difference between the lenses isnt noticeable unless you are taking professional photies in which case you would be spending more money. With a lens of the same standard the Canon comes out on top, otherwise they are about even.

350D has 8MP not 10.

400D has 10 ;)

I disagree anyway, difference between my Zeiss 35mm prime and Pentax 18-55 is clearly visible, and to my eyes so is the difference between the Pentax 18-55 and Canon 18-55 on Steves digicams.

If you are satisfied with the quality from the Canon kit optics then great, good for you, you can take some very nice looking photos. Just dont sit them next to anything taken with a Pentax or Zeiss.

Like audio equipment, if you cant tell the difference then dont bother. I can tell the difference, so I bother.
