Flickr stats?
on: March 22, 2013, 13:32:21 PM
I know big huge labs has a few tools for looking into viewer stats, but I've yet to find anything that can give an insight into days when there's a massive spike for one day, and nothing has been in explore as far as I know.

We're talk about a spike about 10x higher than the usual daily number of views.

Any ideas?

Depends how its listed under the photo itself, if its saying unknown source as far as I know there isn't a way to tell where people came from.  I have noticed a lot of taffic recently that falls under the unknown source, I imagine its apps on phones that flickr can't recognise, the photo I'ma bout to post in my thread I put on flickr yesterday it had 53 views in total yesterday 29 of which are from unknown.

A big chunk is from flickr, it's just annoying that I have no idea what causes it.

Yeah that's quite a spike, not that I bet your complaining too much about the an extra 446 views, very strange and theres no pattern to the photos that were being viewed, not all in the same set or similar topic?

Counldn't be someone from your work problems having a nose around your photos?

Possibly, it was a mix of sets and photos, would have been easier to figure out if there was a theme to it all

There's a couple of other sites I use to keep a log of my flickr stats that might tell you more but I don't think they will, no harm in trying I guess

http://statsr.net and http://stats.vispillo.org

Both are free but the first only gives you some info you have to pay for everything else, I don't think they'll give you anything more than you can get from flickr.

It's happening again, not sure where the traffic is coming from, checked Flickr scout, it's an image that *has* been in explore, but not for a long time. Flickr stats say unknown source. Tineye only finds one 3 year old use of the image. Bizarre, wish I could find out!

Try google image search, if you drag the image over from its flickr page into the search box it should search and might show up where an image is being used.  I did it on a photo last week and someone had blogged it onto tumblr so it got a load of unknown hits that day, but it doesn't show up all of them as a few other photos with unknown hits didn't show anything up.

I'm curious if anyone else has noticed spikes, since the flickr overhaul?

I seem to get them fairly regularly, maybe every 10-14 days. Except now they're not spikes of 400, but about 3000. Bighugelabs etc doesn't say that I have something in scout or explore, and looking at what's been viewed, it tends to be a lot of images viewed several times, rather than just a few viewed hundreds of times. I'm wondering if the new flickr periodically sifts through user accounts for some reason, and it counts these as views?

I think I read somewhere that its counting views now based on if they turn up in someone's search and if they scroll past the photo as against actually being clicked on it then it counts as a view.  One of my photos that's not really that much but has a shooting star, the ISS and Jupiter in it is getting loads of views per day now as is tagged with all sorts.  If you go onto one of your photos that's getting loads of views you'll see its probably getting loads from flickr.com, click through onto that and it'll give you what people actually searched for, for this one its had 12 views today and this is what it shows:

Referring domain: flickr.com
     Linked from    Views
1    Searched for: stars    5
2    Searched for: shooting    3
3    Searched for: star    3
4    Searched for: iss    1

Not sure if its a good thing or not, this way you know your tags are getting you views but the photo hasn't been clicked on so its not really a view per se, last time I looked there's still some moaning going on about it on the help forums.

Aha, didn't know about that bit of detail.

Looks like on the spike days someone has gone through several of my photostream pages. It's a useful stat I guess, though they could also implement a "click through" stat.

Don't think the "new" flickr accounts get statistics though, so I guess they're probably not fussed about doing anything else to the stats now.

I've got no idea what the basic and new paid for account get but they seem to have done a few things to the stats recently but I do wonder if that'll be it.
