Over the weekend I was asked to go take photos at a local cricket match in Sunderland, Hylton Vs Kimblesworth.  So I borrowed works D2H and took my own D50 both with 70-300mm F4.5-5.6 lenses and a couple of tripods.

5 hours and 700 photos later Im reasonably happy with some of the results especially as it was my first time photographing any type of sports, so I just stayed square of the wicket.  I havent had a chance to go through every single one and weed out the over/under exposed etc photos but I hope to do that over the next few days and post some of my favourites.

Theres a few where the exposure isnt right as the D2H has a problem with its exposure metering and it needs to go off to Nikon to get fixed, I basically had to do all the setting of shutter speeds using the LCD on the back of the camera.

Next time Im gonna change position a lot more, I missed a few wickets by not taking enough photos so next time Ill just keep that shutter release button pressed a bit longer.  Id like a better lense but thats gonna cost lots of pennies.  Maybe a 70-200 with 1.4 teleconverter, gives me about the same reach but at constant F4 which should let me use a lower ISO (used 1000-1600)

/me strokes 18-200 VR Nikkor....

Ive a cheap 70-300 pre-digital zoom Nikkor thats fairly pants but does give you equivalent 450mm focal length. Its a bit rubbish wide open though, anything thats good is £££££ at least!
TBH I feel that the horrendous amount of compression and Jpegging on those pics hides any compromise due to high ISOs! The other thing that stands out for me is that the background in many intrudes too much, so youd be be best choosing a position with a more neutral or featureless bit of the scenery behind, or a wider aperture to get less DoF.

I am plotting to get myself the Sigma 100-300 F4, and later on probably the new Pentax DA* 50-135 F2.8 for indoor sports and portraits. The latter is very similar (read same optical design just made in a different factory and the Pentax one has SuperSonic Focusing) to the new Tokina ATX 50-135.

Gonna cost an arm and a leg though. This is not a cheap hobby! Still good glass is for keeps so baring disasters I should only have to buy it once.

In the meantime I am using old fast primes. I have 35, 50, 90 and 135mm primes at F2.5 and faster, plus a Pentax 200mm F4 for outside which serve fairly well for sports.

Yeah its going to be rather expensive to get anything decent, the 70-300 seems to have done alright but I was probably sitting as close to the wicket as I could, other places around the ground, that might get rid of the busy background was further away.  I might need something around the 400mm range, I just need to win the lottery to afford it.  As for DoF I just stuck with F8 mainly but having looked at them I could have easily got away with 5.6 the fastest the lense can go at, that should help.

As for the jpegging & compression Ive had to shrink all the images right down and put the watermark on as one of the ideas of the club is to sell these to people, so thats more of a preview album.  And its being hosted on my pc at home, so if I put up the full size originals itd kill my connection.

Mongoose, that Sigma 100-300 F4 sounds interesting, just read a review on the net saying it works quite well with a 1.4x teleconverter, might solve a problem of 300mm being a touch too short.

yeah thats my thought too, problem is that 100-300 F4 + 1.4x converter is best part of a grands worth of lens!

some saving to do

£523.99 from One Stop Digital, only £457 on ebay, and Ive seen on the DVD Forums One Stop price matching an ebay auction since One Stop are in effect an ebay shop anyway.

The teleconverter is £101.99 on One Stop Too

Still rather expensive altogether like.  Im hopefully getting a new job soon that might pay a few grand more a year, so was thinking of taking out a loan to upgrade my computer and buy a lense & teleconverter, initial idea was a sigma 70-200 F2.8 + 1.4x but this might be more useful for now.  Unless I just go silly and get both :D

Hmm it let me add a nikon one to my basket and didnt say anything.  Just selected it from the drop down box.  If not just give them an email or if your a member of the dvd forums post in the one stop digital thread in the photography section asking when they are getting any in, theyre usually really helpful.  Probably worth posting in there if you want them to try and price match an ebay auction or other site too.

Compared to other places they are really cheap, quick google and most other places had the same lense for £750 ish :|

sorry Russel, been spending too much time on dedicated camera forums

Canikon = joking and mildly derogatory form of Canon and Nikon used mainly by Pentax, Olympus and Sony shooters.

I might drop them an e-mail, if enough Pentax users bug them perhaps theyll realise theres a market and start stocking the mount.
