Grrr camera!

Stupid bloody camera!

Continuing from this thread i guess http://www.tekforums.net/photography/change-of-temp-cam-issue/

Had yet more issues with my camera!

Again the 7D with the 100-400 lens, was again out in the cold snapping, this time single shot mode, taking a number of photos in a row no where near as fast at the high speed continuous that I have used in the past it started doing the same thing where the camera freezes and then sort of resets.

Then it started locking up entirely, displaying Err on the top LCD but nothing at all on the main screen, I used to get a message here to tell me what the issue was. Have to pull the battery and reinsert to recover from that, it also shows 2 blocks on the screen when in off indicating 2 images in the buffer, these are never written and lost.

It happened at a very annoying point today when I really wanted to be snapping and I am pretty pissed off with it now.

I thought enough, I'll switch to video mode and record the action, it changed into the live view mode then crapped out doing the same resetting thing. I recreated this behaviour a couple of times.

I'm not sure whats causing the issue here, but it died when not writing to memory.

I wanted to do some further testing at home so left the camera outside to try and keep the conditions the same but i could not recreate the issue.

I have a non canon battery grip and batteries but don't believe this is the issue.

I'd call canon but since the body and lens were from ebay and imported I'm not sure where I stand, I'd probably have to pay for service, since I cant reproduce the fault myself I doubt they could help either.

Just no idea what to do and pretty frustrated with the thing. I think I can only really try to rule things out at this stage by ditching the non canon batteries and pack and see if the issue occurs again, I dont even know if its temperature or use related

I'd try genuine batteries, maybe temperature is affecting the performance. Also I know you said that it died without writing to memory, but I'd also still try a different memory card. Failing that I'm thinking there's not much you can do short of sending it for a service. Firmware?

I did once have to send my 400d for a service as my computer wouldn't connect via usb. They ended up replacing the pcb in the camera, so maybe their circuit boards do go...?

Iv got 2 CF cards, not sure if it suffers this issue on both, will have to see if it happens again and swap the cards if it does.

Iv taken the battery grip off and am running on the genuine battery supplied with the camera now to rule that out, again wont know if its that till it happens... or doesn't, no way to know.

Its on the latest firmware, going to hard reset (remove the battery and backup battery overnight) to make sure its all reset in case there's something stored causing this.

It may be an issue with either the camera or the lens, unless I or canon can recreate the issue on demand I'm not sure there's anything they can do, not sure on the cost of a service but cant see it being cheap I doubt there's any warranty on the camera/lens. I have emailed canon customer services with a description of the issue in the hope they may have seen it before.

Its pretty frustrating.

i would try a different make/model mem card first. could be hitting a dodgy/corrupt area on the mem card?

Worth a try

I have had a response from Canon customer services so will work with them to see if they can work out what the issue is.

Epic waste of time that, their response was if it happens again send it in for repair.

No good since I cant tell if its the camera or the lens at this point.

I think Canon's service is generally alright. Good case scenarios of sending it in is them not caring about it being grey market, or at least having a look and saying what the issue is before giving you a quote for repairs. If they say the camera is fine you'll at least know it's the lens.

Aren't there places that service cameras unofficially, might be another route if it's cheaper.

That or sell it on ebay and get a 6D? ;)

Get the 6D, any excuse for an upgrade!

Not sure how Canon would treat it with being a grey import, it might be worth a shot, whats the worst they can do find out its an import then send it back to you without doing anything most it'll cost you is postage and if they do try and fix it then you win a nice repair bill but have a working camera.

Might be worth looking into where you got it from, if its one of the grey import sites selling via ebay I've heard of them of them saying they'll send it to their local canon/nikon repair centre if you send it back to them, but risky if it gets 'lost' in the post however.
