Jessops = gone

Terrible news today that Jessops has closed.

Its a real shame, I'm not aware of any other store chain that specialises in photography, that I can wander into and get film developed or is open after business hours (till 8pm) that I can visit to pick up stuff I need in a hurry which I have done on more than 1 occasion.

They may have been expensive but they were very handy  :(

Yeah tis a shame, bought a couple of things from them in the past the last being my D7000 which I got with about £80's worth of tesco clubcard vouchers that doubled up to £160, made my D7000 fairly cheap, definitely a useful shop for sure!

Quite surprised that they've just shut the lot of them, they'd just done out the Metorcentre store into one of their posh new shops, thought at least they'd get rid of most but keep the ones they'd done up and try and have another go with a smaller set of stores.  Also quite surprised that there isn't a sell off of at least all of the Jessops branded stuff.

Theres a couple of local stores but last time I was in them they weren't up to much, guess its online ordering for everything for me now.

stores struggling to compete with online prices. Only ever bought something once, then it was over priced - just that I had love2shop vouchers that needed using.
I wont be missing them.

I wonder what this will mean for smaller independant shops, as lets face it, it's still useful to have a brick and mortar shop where you can go and try lenses before you buy. I've bought from Jessops and my Local independant a couple of times, they're both more expensive than online, but often had deals that got them either slightly cheaper, or close to the cheapest price I could find. I didn't mind paying 5% extra for the convenience of the added customer service!

I had hoped there'd be a stock clearance sale, maybe a 5D or 6D reduced would have been nice :D

I also wonder what would have happened if you had a credit agreement on something, I assume you would still pay that off as it's through  separate finance company?

I think chain stores biggest problems is successful stores supporting the quieter stores. Its the wrong business model - Comet for example had 3 or 4 stores across cardiff.
As they was all on retail parks, people would need a car to get to them - thats 1 sale split between 4 stores.

Look at Ikea & their stores are few & far between - on the M4 route for example Cardiff, Bristol & London - big catchment areas for the stores.
M3 = Southampton. People are quite happy to drive 50 miles or so to the store as well.

the sad thing is that they've largely killed photography on the high street, because they bought out most of the independents and have now gone bust. TBH I'm surprised Jessops lasted this long but the end result is a great shame. We can only hope the independents will recover a little to fill the gap, because there's just nothing like putting a camera to your eye before you buy it.
