Lego 8-)

I was just going through my mails and out of boredom clicked a link in someones signature on a mailinglist.

Hes basically gone and made a 3D movie of carnivorous plants. "meh" you say? Maybe so, until you read how he did it!

http://www.3dsyndrome.com/automata.html

Basically as he was doing macro work, and 3D stuff needs 2 cameras, the camera lenses would have had to be 6mm apart. Because of cost and practicality, theres not much you can do for macrowork as you need some pretty specialist equipment.

So what did he do? He used lego mindstorms to create a frame that would automatically hold a single camera, take a photo, move 6mm and take another photo. This enabled him to create a 3D timelapse movie of carnivorous plants. He also created a rotating thingymajig to do 360 spinning scenes. I dont know about you but I find this pretty impressive and inspiring at the same time!

It takes me back to when I made a basic hand skeleton and put it in a glove, and used the pneumatic lego technik stuff to make it crawl across the floor!

It makes me want to give it a go, its just a glimpse of what could probably be done with that stuff.
