Me and my sister are going camera shopping tomorrow.
Im planning on buying a Canon IXUS 900TI for myself
and my sis wants a DSLR so she is getting a Canon EOS 350D with 18-55mm lens.
Any comments on either? I havent really done much research on them yet.

I just wanted to check that these are good cameras. I was going to be going for a Sony Cyber-shot W50 or W70 this week anyway and the 900ti looks to be better for the same price (at Jessops).

£200 for dSLR !!!! only 15 a day though - though the bottom says 30.
1/2 tempted to go grab my kippy bag & drive the 100odd miles to cardiff

The EOS gets good reviews, but Id personally go for a Pentax K1000D if I were to get a DSLR. A forum member has one. Theyre very well designed, simple to use, and overlooked. The plain K1000 is great if you want to shoot actual film :lol:
The street price on a K1000D is @600USD as a frame of reference.

Eos 350d is a good camera, have tried one and they will do the biz. kit lens isnt as great as the camera body but is adequate for most photographic purposes. At £200 its a steal - if you can get hold of one, get there early.
On the ixus the zoom is a tad short at just X3. OK for light use in clubs and snaps but you may have problems at zooming longer distances.

If youre talking about me, its a K10D
and yes, its a bloody great camera! even makes me look like I know what Im doing on occasion (which is hard).
There is also the K100D which is a slightly cheaper model (circa £400 vs £600 for the K10). The K100 has a slightly smaller viewfinder image, is generally a smaller camera and has more "novice friendly" shooting modes. The K10 has better resolution (10.2mp), faster continuous drive and more buttons and dials to play with.
Both have Shake Reduction built into the camera which neither Canon nor Nikon have. Well worth a consideration if youre looking at a DSLR and dont already have an investment in glass. Jessops usually carry Pentax, Olympus, Nikon and Canon kit so its well worth getting them to let you play with all 4 before you make up your mind. Horses for courses and all that, the Pentax is best for me but might not be best for you.

Ah, its the k100D. Played with one in a store. Looks to be the business. Just like the venerable K1000 which was marketed mainly as a "students camera" theres no reason to not use it for "real shooting". Vintage P-mount lenses can be found for dirt cheap and are the most common bayonet style. As long as you dont mind manual focus & aperture priority when using those lenses.

Update.
The store opened @ 8.30am this morning so me and my sister rocked up at 5.30am. There were already people there! We were around 30th in the queue.
I have to give massive credit to Jessops, they bought out tea and coffee and free March editions of major photography magazines.
At about 7.00am the manager came out and handed out vouchers to the first 30 people who wanted 350s and all cameras. So then ours were secured!
Lots of people left to come and collect their cameras when the rush had died down a bit. Me and my sis stayed to pick up ours there and then.
Very happy with mine so far. Need to get a case and larger SD card but its responsive and small so im happy!

Try http://www.7dayshop.com for the SD cards, should be *cheap* and they might have a case that will fit ;)
Good for CF too, so get your sis to have a look, buying together will halve postage costs.

they are indeed great, I am going out today to shoot some sports so I am taking my fastest lenses. Not one of them is less than 15 years old, and not one of them cost me more than £50.

The 900ti is supprisingly heavy, ive been playing with it today and everytime I pick it up I notice the weight. Not a major problem, just something I spotted.

Higher weight will reduce shake. also points towards sturdy construction. Should be no problem, providing it isnt too heavy to carry easily.
Check that the ixus will use a 4GB card before you buy one, my Panasonic will only take 2GB ones and some others only 1gb.

I cant find any specifics in the manual on card capacities, its says it supports SD and SDHC (high capacity) but not what sizes.
I shall google it before buying. Cheers.
EDIT: quick google and it seems it does support 4gb SDHC, found it bundled with some 900Ti packages. :-)

SDHC means it should support 4 gig cards no problem. Be wary of cheap SD cards though, Ive had a lot fail on me. Now I only buy Sandisk cards!

I ordered these two this morning, I know they are cheap but I cant justify 4x the price on a better brand.

They are perfectly OK, they might be a bit slower than more expensive cards but it shouldnt make any real difference. I still have a couple of their 1GB cards from when they were £17.99 and they have *never* failed me. Chances are they will be either no name, but made by a big, well known, manufacturer or something like Viking. My laresr 1GB 133X from them were Viking branded.
A single 4GB card will give you a thousand or more images, should be enough for a good 2 weeks holiday

God thats depressing.... I payed several times that amount for my 300D setup a few years back. :( :?

think thats depressing, Techno were selling off Samsung GX1-Ls with 18-55 and 50-200 twin lens kit for £199 a month or so ago.
I spent £600 on the same camera and lenses with Pentax badges on (*ist DL2) 8 months ago.
