Title: Panning - for skateboards!
Post by: Sara on May 19, 2006, 16:30:20 PM
I have a bit of trouble panning, as with the S5500, the viewfinder goes blank as the camera is recording, meaning if Im using the viewfinder (which I prefer) rather than the LCD, I just kindof have to swing the camera to the sound of things passing by me, which is probably a bit daft...

Anyhow, even with a silly method, it seems to work on occasion :D

Thanks! Apart from the goofy look on his face, I like them too :D I never knew there was a whole sub-set of skateboarding devoted to slides (those are purpose-made gloves). Bizarre stuff.

There are a few more pictures of him and another dude who completely stacked it here (http://www.sarawallen.com/photos/index.php?action=gallery&gallery=Crazy%20Skaters)

Remind me to send your new lad a proper set of pants and a belt. The current set is oh so Los Angeles Incarceration circa 95. ;)

Dont use the movie to record em :)

Shove it on last 5 mode... then hold the shutter down, pan with the skateborder... and release. Hopefully youll have one of the shots bang on.

If not you can get a cool effect from stacking them. 5 shots of one object moving in a straight line with a slight blur = Ooooooh!! :D

I wasnt using the movie mode, M3, just a slowish shutter (like, 1/40 or 1/50).

Had forgotten abot the final-5 thing. Not sure mine does that many though, maybe only 3? Definitely worth trying next time... Is it easier to follow action by using the LCD instead of the EVF?

Edit: Just checked the manual, yep def only final 3, at 3 pics/sec, which is a bit slow and rubbish but better than rekying on just the one shot I suppose!

ah right :)

yeah I think the 5500 has a lower number for some reason, but its still good. You should still be able to shove it on continuous mode however and just snap away constantly at about 2fps until your memory card is full. Might be another way of doing it at least. (Beware, itll drop the quality down to 1MP when on that mode.)

I find it easier... as you can see where everything is prior to it being within your viewfinder. you can see when he starts to come into your field of view, and perhaps start panning before hitting the shutter button.

I do that anyway :) The "chhhrrrsshshhhh" noise of the gloves and skateboard wheels on the tarmac helped me follow him last time, which was handy!

You lot offended by the bagginess or the halfway-down-rump-ness of the jeans? The latter is all the rage amongst todays freshers, dontchaknow.

I wouldnt say Ive got him trained, but he learns quick ;)

Its quite common, my FZ20 handles movement OK until you take the first picture and then it freezes until the next picture is taken so you have to take pot luck.
