Possibly buying a 400d, rough price aim needed
on: March 03, 2013, 23:13:25 PM
Friend is upgrading to a 650d and looking to sell his 400d.

1 x 400d body
18-55mm kit lens
Neck strap
3 x batteries
Charger
2 x 8gb SD cards
1 x 2gb SD card
Box
Manual
Photography with 400d pocket guide.

What do you think I should offer him for the package? Thinking £175.

Going by a local shops used section:

http://www.castlecameras.co.uk/used-equipment/used-list

Body + kit lens sells for ~ £200

If he were to take the above into a shop, if they were going to sell the package I'd imagine they'd sell it for ~ £220. They'd probably offer him around £150 in credit.

I think on ebay you'd expect to pay £190-240 for it all maybe, but after the seller fees and the hassle, I think offering him £175 is quite reasonable. Especially as a "mates rate" thing. You could always suggest that in future you might buy some other lenses, so if you have canon and he does it provides the opportunity to swap lenses for trips etc...?

175 would be about right but not a fantastic deal imo. I'd count everything apart from the body and lens as almost no value, maybe £10 as its pretty much the expected extras.

i wouldnt bother. Id look to spend a bit extra & get a 450 minimum. You will wish you did the first time you decide to record something for video playback.

Hardly in the spirit of DSLR though, its a feature I have never seriously used on any of my cameras, just need to look at the old camcorder tapes that have never been watched to know its a waste of time.

Guy wants £150 so happy to give it a go at that. Don't need a 400d for video recording my phone already does 1080p video and I'm getting an action camera soon to do the same on bikes.

Thinking more for finally having a step into the DSLR market from my Fuji finepix s5000.
Its served me well for years as a capable camera especially with filters and the wide angle and teleconverter attachments. Just I fancy something more capable and the 400d my mate is selling seems like it's a good fit.

If your using that excuse, you phone also take photos.
Im not sure how much 450d go for (the first canon after 400d to record video). Its worth a punt for that

I didn't really like the idea of video to start too, but I've come round to it a little. I've often taken videos at work whilst the camera is hooked up to a microscope, and the £200 commission I've been asked to take a couple of 30s videos. Can easily do that all from the 7D. I wouldn't consider it as a replacement for a dedicated video camera, but it'll do in a pinch.

I really need to replace my 50mm lens (It died when I thought my camera was connected to the tripod, it wasn't, and it met the floor), I want something small that would mean I can conceivably take my SLR with me everywhere. 40mm pancake might be an idea.

£150 is perfect, and as a first camera it will last you well.

Welcome to the club (just a shame its not a Nikon)

Think the 650d is the first canon to record video. At least that's the reason mate is upgrading.

450d adds live view but that's it.

ahh yep - its liveview out of the box. I think theres a hacked firmware that allows video playback :D

just out of interest......... http://www.cinema5d.com/news/?p=2818
Maybe if you saw a UFO you would get better clarity with a nice 400m lens attached than some handheld camcorder

Yeah, SLRs are being used for film. I still don't think they're a replacement for a video camera though.

Last year when I was helping the GF with her fieldwork, I had my 7D and 400mm lens, she had a video recorder. Whilst observing some birds, I worked out I had about 8x zoom with my kit, she had about 30x. It was the difference between me getting a nice zoomed in shot of a group of birds, and her getting video of a single one of those birds swallowing a worm.

And then there's the fact that if suddenly we needed to capture video of the entire lagoon, she just would need to zoom out. I'd have to get my wide angle lens out and put it on before being able to do the same thing. Not to mention my 400mm lens is about 3x the size of the camera she was using and about 5x the weight.

There's no doubting the SLRs are able to produce nice video, I'm just saying they're still not a practical solution for everything.

SLRs are very good at filming very specific things, and can give you a lot more flexibility in terms of style as well, switching lenses to give different effects/viewpoints and using apeture to give an arty depth of field,, but are no so good as a proper video camera replacement for general purpose holiday videos etc..

The even major films are using them, some of the view points on the latest transformers film using Canon SLRs, putting them in tough boxes to get shots in falling rubble and stuff.
