Do you use any kind of location scouting apps or programs? I guess there are probably places an hour or two away down here that would be good, it's just knowing about them first!
Wouldn't say I use any location scouting apps, I just keep an eye on my flickr contacts and if they post something that looks like a good location stick it on my google maps page. On my way back from the lakes we stopped off at a big farm shop (Cranstons Cumbrian Foothall, worth a visit if your in the area!) and they had some photos up in the cafe from a local photographer, so I've gone through his site and got a fair few locations from there. Occasionally there's some interesting places that are flagged up on local TV or maybe something like country file that'll give me ideas.
If I'm going to an area on holiday I'll have a look on flickr maps and see what looks interesting, I'll also look on sites like trip advisor, tourist info sites and get some general ideas of whats around then google them till I know exactly where it is and if needs be do myself some directions and print out maps so I can get there.
There's a couple of useful sites like

Same idea but for castles:
http://www.castlestories.net/map/England.htmlhttp://www.castlestories.net/map/Scotland.htmlhttp://www.castlestories.net/map/Wales.html There's also a few sites I don't use much but have in my favourites:
http://www.ephotozine.com/photolocationshttp://www.mapmyphoto.co.uk/And I guess the other one is photography magazines, I subscribe to one and occasionally pick up others and they have some good stuff in sometimes for locations. Guess the key is if you see a picture you like the look of then find out where it was taken and make a note of it.
