That last one is a real beauty, how did it come out in colour?

Actually not that well, it was quite misty so everything looked a bit blue and well misty didn't help being taken early afternoon so the light wasn't great, that's why it ended up as a B&W it looked a bit flat in colour.

Agreed. A classic shot that would make an excellent print. Would love to take a shot like that.

Thanks, I printed it out A3 at work today, looks good but the mountains in the background look a touch soft but that's down to the mist and me being picky lol, I imagine it'd be a bit more forgiving on a canvas however.  Well next time your in the lakes the jettys easy to get to you might need some filters but its down to the conditions on the day.

Thanks, I'm a couple of hours from where I took these photos, other side of the country really but its not that far really.

The one thing I've been working towards is trying to get a photo in flickrs explore, so far I haven't or so I thought till looking on bighugelabs scout turns out 2 of my photos have been in explore but then were dropped out of it again so they don't show up unless you look on the dropped ones, turns out they both got to #480 so am quite pleased apart from the dropped bit of course!

Do you use any kind of location scouting apps or programs? I guess there are probably places an hour or two away down here that would be good, it's just knowing about them first!

That is something special, haven't yet worked out why exactly, but its immediately gripping. Detail in the water at the front, perfect reflection in the back, perfect use of thirds rule, amazing perspective aided by the angular rocks in the foreground. The framing really has been nailed. Congrats.

Wouldn't say I use any location scouting apps, I just keep an eye on my flickr contacts and if they post something that looks like a good location stick it on my google maps page.  On my way back from the lakes we stopped off at a big farm shop (Cranstons Cumbrian Foothall, worth a visit if your in the area!) and they had some photos up in the cafe from a local photographer, so I've gone through his site and got a fair few locations from there.  Occasionally there's some interesting places that are flagged up on local TV or maybe something like country file that'll give me ideas.

If I'm going to an area on holiday I'll have a look on flickr maps and see what looks interesting, I'll also look on sites like trip advisor, tourist info sites and get some general ideas of whats around then google them till I know exactly where it is and if needs be do myself some directions and print out maps so I can get there.

There's a couple of useful sites like http://data.mapchannels.com/mc3/7593/engalndwaterfalls_7593.htm?v=3&x=-2.103881&y=55.021724&z=9&t=3&f=1 for the waterfalls in England, although it looks hardly complete as there aren't many down south.

Same idea but for castles:
http://www.castlestories.net/map/England.html
http://www.castlestories.net/map/Scotland.html
http://www.castlestories.net/map/Wales.html

There's also a few sites I don't use much but have in my favourites:

http://www.ephotozine.com/photolocations
http://www.mapmyphoto.co.uk/

And I guess the other one is photography magazines, I subscribe to one and occasionally pick up others and they have some good stuff in sometimes for locations.  Guess the key is if you see a picture you like the look of then find out where it was taken and make a note of it.

Thanks!  Useful tip I've found out quite by chance recently is that if you want good reflections like that then use an ND filter to give you a slower exposure, it smooths out all the ripples in the water so you end up with better reflections.
