Those are both stunning!

Thanks, haven't been able to get much done over the last week or so and probably won't get too much done over the next few months but we'll see, still got a backlog of shots from my holiday and a couple of other things to get through even if I can't get out and get anything new.

So have a new one, got an almost identical shot I need to finish off but for now this is an 11 shot pano of the view from my parents bedroom balcony in the hotel we were in:

Out of interest, how many photos do you tend to take on a trip, and how long do you spend processing/sorting them out afterwards? It's hard to tell as you post consistently high quality images, but also state about needing time to sort them out, but you only ever post a few at a time :D

For me I think I don't necessarily take "too many", but I don't seem to be able to whittle down the number that well afterwards to just a select "good" few.

I took just under 2k in a week  on this holiday :o checked a few previous holidays and sometimes its only 1000 in a week, few others closer to 2k again.  Most trips out for sunrises etc I've noticed I'm taking a lot less than I used to, some of my last few trips out I've only taken 20-30 where as it was more like 50-60 last year but that'll be down to me improving my eye I guess.

As for how long to sort them, well the holiday ones take a fair while, I normally sort them into date then put them into folders named after where or what so I can remember when I look back at them.  Doing all that can take a while but then doing that I'll pick out photos I want to edit and go back over them later on.  Normally it can be a few weeks inbetween trips out so that's normally why I end up posting in batches, might only get out once or twice a month, sometimes more though.

I sometimes find it hard to work out which ones I want to edit, especially for say sunrises/sunsets since the light changes quite quickly I'll try and take a few shots around what I think then try a few 'shooting to the right' as I'm just starting to get my head around that one.  But sitting down looking at them on a computer I can't always pick out the 'one' to edit so sometimes have to do it a few times, sometimes though I can just pick it straight out but its quite hard usually.

Had some good news at work tempered by some bad news at home, good news is I got a promotion which is a couple of £k extra a year and less hours, along with just paying off the last of a loan this month means I'll have some spare money for some new toys (looking at the Tamron 17-50 f2.8 and the Samyang 8mm f3.5, can't afford full frame yet I don't think so I'll stick with crop stuff for now) also bought a new tripod/head over the weekend in Costco that's a bit lighter than my old tripod.  Bad news is my Mam's got some health problems at the mo which we're waiting to find out how serious over the next few days which has put a bit of a downer on the end of the year.

Was hoping to get more edited today especially some from Pompeii but I didn't, however I should be off out later on for some wire wool stuff so might have something interesting to post from that in a few days...

That top one is so a facebook cover photo image!

I'm thinking if tomorrow is misty I'll try and do some mushroom photography. When you were off in these places did you use ND filters much because of the sun? Or just dial back the exposure?

That's not a bad idea, might set it when I get in tonight.

Never actually managed to get a decent mushroom shot yet, saying that haven't tried too much might give it a go over the winter, something else to add to the to do list.

I took my ND's but only used them a couple of times but didn't get much with them, when your out and about during the day the sun's quite harsh but its also fairly even which means you can get away without using any.  Only time I noticed it being bad was a few shots in some alley ways that were quite gloomy, but the part of the sky you can see is totally blown out with no way of fixing it, and trying to expose for the sky meant it was fairly dark and the results haven't been great.

Well mushrooms are a week or two behind, season-wise, but I found today in the New Forest that they're pretty much "over". A lot of the best/most funky species tend to appear and then die back quite quickly.

Still, there's a few around. I find them to be quite photogenic typically. I think the fact they're usually quite sturdy things, means with a decent low tripod, you can get some good angles etc.

That 2nd ones really good, like the bright red colour on the top, really stands out against the rest of the browns & greens.

My new tripod lets me get fairly low which I've never been able to do before so might have to give it a try, just need to get a shorter centre column so I can get really low, should be very handy for some macro stuff.

Tripod wise, I can't fault the Manfrotto I use. It's one of the ones where you can have the centre column either vertical or horizontal. This basically means for things like mushrooms, where the column might be too tall, I can put it horizontal and then have the camera essentially resting on the ground. Fiddly to do, but I find it makes it more stable than trying to prop the camera on its own on bits of debris etc.

I got myself a new tripod a couple of weeks ago, bit of an impulse buy when I was in Costco, I thought it would let me do rotate the centre column but turns out theres 2 models of that tripod, one that does and one that doesn't, guess which I picked up...  Not too bothered at the mo as its much lighter than my old one and if I get the shorter centre column I can get really low which might be handy sometimes.

Got a gripe with flickr, nothing major, but one of my contacts has uploaded a really good photo and its up to 36k views in a few days which is nearly as much on one photo as I've had on my entire photostream!  I upload a photo and am lucky if it gets 150 views in a few days.  Obviously the contacts photo made it onto explore but its one thing I just can't seem to do, tis rather annoying, well more like am jealous lol.

And some holiday photos of some Cloisters in Sorrento:

The views on flickr though are more to do with how you market the images. If that contact put the photo in several popular groups, and has a lot of followers/contacts, he's bound to get a load of views?

That's how I always thought it was but he had it in 3 groups and I think they were ones that he'd been invited to put the photo in, must have been lots of contacts.

First one from Pompeii, got a few to upload this week but naming them is proving a touch difficult so far!
