Used equipment sellers?
on: May 15, 2013, 15:55:58 PM
Should we have a sticky for shops that have "used" sections. I'd rather buy a used lens through a shop than ebay. Usually I find a website that has good deals, and then promptly forget about it when i'm actually looking.

The only one I know from my head is my local camera shop, which does do web orders:

I'm always dubious about buying used lenses from ebay, usually someones selling them for a reason, could be legit but could be cause it has issues and shops like that one won't touch it.  Only used lens I bought was from CEX and I could get my hands on it before I bought it so could give it a once over.

Here's a load I found ages and had lying around in an email, none of which I've actually used to 2nd hand gear but worth a trawl through if your looking for something.

I've bought a ton of used lenses from Ebay, almost never had a problem.

I follow the philosophy that if you buy camera gear from someone who can't take a good photograph, you're taking a risk (clearly not a photographer), and I look for a good clear description which says things like "no fungus, no scratches, clear optics" etc, so that you have maximum comeback if the item is not as described.

So far, I've only had one bad experience and I'm 95% sure that was the post offices fault, not the sellers.

Saying that, there's something to be said for a physical shop so you can try before you buy and you know where you can take the lens back in the event of a problem. I have used www.srsmicrosystems.co.uk extensively, their shop in Watford is an fantastic place to go and look at/play with/chat/buy camera gear. The owner, Chris, is a great guy and only seems to employ people who like cameras.

I'm currently looking for the 100mm L macro lens at a reasonable price. Like you, my 100mm was an eBay bargin. It's a good lens but the IS and weather sealing would be useful for the kinds of stuff I do.

That or that ridiculous 1-5x magnification manual focus lens.
