New compact camera for the Mrs.
on: November 13, 2009, 23:24:10 PM
My Mrs managed to empty a bottle of water in to her handbag, killing in the process her Canon powershot camera.

Do you have any suggestions?? It needs to be small, easy to use and take good pictures and have a good zoom.

Looking at around £150 mark, but quite flexible.

Looking at the below (not necessarily from this retailer)

Panasonic Lumix TZ6 Digital Camera - Black (10.1MP, 12x Optical Zoom) 2.7 inch LCD

lol I was about to recommend the Pentax W series for the same reason.

The Lumix TZ cameras are nice from what Ive seen, very good zoom for the size.

I really like the Lumix point and shoot cameras. Im currently using an Olympus Tough but wouldnt recommend it unless you plan on using it in the wet or batter it (like i do)

The TZ6 is quite nice and should be very adequate.

One of the things I have seen recently is a shoulder holster that can be hidden under a coat or jacket. The camera fits where the gun would normally. Means she wont have the problem of fishing it out the handbag and can pretend to be 007, licenced to photograph.

Cheers for the feedback guys, what is the picture like on the Olympus? just as my Mrs does tend to drop/pour a bottle of water in her cameras?

Cheers

Nothing special. I think Dooms and I agree that its ace for what it is, but as a camera on its own there are better quality pictures to be had for the money.

I mean...if you want:

A camera which can be dropped from several feet onto concrete and survive
A camera that can be sat on
A camera that can have a bottle of water poured on it
A camera which can be used without qualm in the rain
A camera that can be used in the pool, sea, pond or fishtank
A camera which can be used in freezing/snowy climes
A camera which takes mediocre pictures (not bad, just nothing special)
A camera which is quite slim profile

Then one of the tough cameras is for you.

If on the other hand you want a cheap camera that takes good photos, look elsewhere :/

The same can be said of the Pentax Ws, image quality is fine but not as good as some other compacts. Thing is to make them water-tight the lens has to stay inside the body, which makes the optical design a real challenge.

yep me and Zpyder definatly agree, I love my Tough to bits as its survived some horrible things (Dirt motorbike crashes, rocks, rolls, its covered in dents, 1 year backpacking in Australia which includes beaches, sand and sea) and its still working!!!

Camera quality suffers a bit (not a HUGE amount, still can take some good photos just not as good as the similar spec non tough ones) but considering I would of needed 3-10 new cameras for what Ive done with the tough Im happy.

Sooooo as said above the summary is if you dont NEED a tough go elsewhere but if it will save you a camera or 10 its worth looking into :)

I guess its worth noting that pretty much all the photos posted in my work thread of critters and the likes were taken with an Olympus tough this year. The Macro/Super Macro mode is actually rather good.

Oh and they are excellent if you want to get an enclosure and go suba diving with it (yes i know its water proof but not properly) because of its underwater modes is one the best cheap ones for diving.

and being "water proof" if the casing were to leak it has a better shot at survival
