Self portraits?
on: February 01, 2011, 00:55:42 AM
Anyone up for posting some examples?

I have been trying to take a decent photo of myself, have made several attempts in the past, a good tripod helps, self timer is a bit hit and miss though as it focuses when you press the button not before it takes the photo.. annoying. Remote release will sort that just need to find a good cheap one.

I'll bravely post my best effort so far:

do I remember correctly that you are a Canon man? if so, 7dayshop is your friend

irritatingly they currently don't have their own brand one in Canon fit, but the Canon brand one is significantly better made anyway (I've used both as Pentax use the same plug and I refuse to pay £27 just to have the right brand name on my remote!)

I don't do self portraits often, not really my thing (I picked up the camera as an excuse NOT to be in front of it!)

here's one I took years ago

Meh, they can be had for £20-30 on ebay.

And funnily enough, I could be tempted to sell one, as I have one spare - I broke the aerial off of one and bought a replacement on ebay, only to open up the broken one and solder the aerial back, works a charm...and I don't need 2...

have a look at RF-602 yongnuo - They start at around £20 on ebay & they work as both remote shutter release &/or to release an external flash.
Supposedly autofocus on 1/2 press as well
Still waiting for delivery of mine, so not sure if it will release & set the speedlite off.

I have two of them, very good remotes, the only thing you can't really do is bulb mode long exposure as no lock to keep them in place :) Really good range as well, I have used remote flashes at least 20m away (not for portraits obviously)

Bought one of these (on its way) http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=180619903505&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT

Has a lock for long exposures and a timer for timed shots

I'll check the other one out for wireless triggering

Yeah a couple of my mates have that on the 7D, really handy for time lapse as well, couldn't find one for the 500D but looks like they are round now so might just have to purchase one too!

same make as my flash & wireless remote - them yongnuo make decent stuff for the pennies they charge.
