Xmas photos
on: January 06, 2013, 11:41:04 AM
So I spent 10 days up around Yorkshire and Derbyshire this xmas. Totally forgot I had an ND Grad filter, but took some on the fly HDR shots as the weather was that bad and overcast a normal shot would have just been rubbish with blown out, dull skies etc.

I've ended up with about 113 "None people" photos, so apologies for the large number here, I'm mostly curious what people think about the photos and which ones they like more etc. I'll try to break them down by type of shot, starting with the Resevoir HDRs.

Probably my favourite:

Composition is bad on this one, but I wanted to try and get the reflections in the water. Didn't know how well it'd work if it consisted of 3 shots!

Water HDR 4 by Chris_Moody, on Flickr

This was an ambitious one. Panoramic, 7 HDR shots then photomerged together, so 21 photos altogether. Photoshop had issues with the merge so I ended up doing the stitching in Hugin, manually.

One of the rare occasions we had a bit of blue sky:

Next up, the obigatory xmas bird feeder photos.

My favourites of those are Water, Water HDR 3 just for the clouds and the Lake panorama too which I think you've ended up with a good result from.

The bird feeder was a couple of metres away from the kitchen window. Pretty much the entire time it was drizling and overcast, which is why the ISO is so high and the photos so grainy.

And finally, some miscellaneous shots from our explorations!

Question is, which of these two are better, this one:

or this one:

The landscapes aren't bad, they do lack a bit in colour a bit so might benefit from a B&W conversion.  You've done a good job of stitching that 21 shot pano together as well, had a look at it full size and couldn't see any stitch lines in it at all.

The shots of the birds on the feeder are great, I miss having birds in my garden (too many cats around to attarct them into my yard with feeders, they won't go anywhere near them).

Your street stuff is good too, all nicely exposed which is always a challenege in that sort of an environment at night.  Between the two shots I probably prefer img_460, the buildings in the bottom right of the other one are a little too distracting in the other one and there's less sky in img_460 and what's there has more interesting clouds.

Good efforts overall though, looks a nice spot to have spent Christmas.

I really like that final shot of the candle too. Also the first of the bridge photos works better for me, I think its just the better angle and way the background is, everything seems too far to the right in the other one.

Cheers guys. I wonder if the second bridge photo would be "better" if that orange and grey building in the very bottom right corner wasn't there?

It probably would, it does seem to stand out quite a bit to me not sure why its not like its brightly coloured or anything daft like that it just sticks out a bit.

I think it's a combination of the contrasting strong orange and bright white of the building that draws the eye. If I could be assed I'd have a play in Photoshop, and dull the buildings colours to see if it makes a difference!
