It's been a while....Fieldwork photos!
on: June 15, 2012, 09:41:21 AM
It's been a few years since I've been on a fieldwork contract, but I'm revisiting Arne this year to do a follow-up survey 3 years on, so let the photos begin :D

These were all taken with my S100 (Sometimes my Olympus tough) as the SLR is too big and heavy to lug around all day on the heath. I have to say the macro capabilities are interesting, though annoying. At the wide end you can focus up to 3cm away, which is awesome. If you zoom though the focus distance drops off sharply, and I think actually results in the subject at its closest not filling as much of the frame! Annoying for wildlife/insects if you want to get close without disturbing them!

Had a bit of a PP play with this one.

Good old Campylopus introflexus, an invasive moss...

I really like that photo of the ants and the one of the moss, it almost looks as though it's been hit with dew.

Yeah, the moss had been hit by the rain :D

I love ant, it's a shame the wood ants are so aggressive, as I'd love to spend a few hours at a nest photographing them but usually you only have a minute or two before they're up your trousers and trying to bite whatever they can. I think this summer as well as spending a day trying to get dragonflie in flight again, I'll spend a while with the wood ants too :D

I really like the Nymph and jumping spider, pretty much because of how small they actually are. The Nymph was about 2-3mm long and the spider about 4mm. I think the camera gets closer than my 100mm macro +7D, though the image quality might not be as good. Maybe I can do something with the CHDK and motion detection so I can set it to take pictures as an ant runs past!

I'd love to try and get some macro shots of ants doing stuff, I imagine its quite difficult but could prove to be fun, as long as there's no biting going on.  I haven't seen any ants around mine I could use, my parents get some but they usually cover them in ant powder as soon as they appear which is a shame ants are cool.

Its still quite good quality for a P+S and I bet its quite a lot easier to work with too.  Motion detected shots would be good same with doing a time lapse of them, just as long as you could get them doing something interesting.

My favourite is the ants, although might benefit from a little noise reduction. I'm impressed with the camera and it's macro, and good to see that you don't have a really shallow depth of field, but assume that's partly compensated by the high ISO?

The moss one could make a nice desktop background as well ;)

Yeah, they are a bit noisey but I have found with a small & light camera its harder to keep steady, especially when you're hunched over a nest of large biting ants trying not to fall on it :D

I'm still experimenting with the camera. Unlike my 7D you can set the auto-iso to have an upper limit, though I still just tend to whack it up.

Noise is also in part due to using unsharp mask on the photo.

I also find myself starting to like a little noise in photos. I find it can add an extra element :D

Horsefly by Chris_Moody, on Flickr

Check out the fangs on the horsefly chewing on my gaiters :|

I felt a bit mean squishing it but I got the impression this guy wouldn't stop till he'd made full use of his fangs...

Those things have a very nasty bite.

It wouldn't have given up, squishing is the only answer... :ptu:
