Title: 106 Rallye Progress thread
Post by: mr_roll on May 13, 2006, 19:13:05 PM
As I type this pictures are being uploaded from our 1st days work on the rallye

The URL is http://www.fya-lan.co.uk/106-rallye

Take a look.

Ill resize them later.

Theres also some of Alans Engine. I havnt even looked at the pics.

To do:
New OS rear wheel arch trim
Crack in bumper and see if the bumper can be upped on both sides at all
Get brakes looked at
Get the engine looked at
Get new front fog lamps
Fix Bonnet (get a body shop to beat the bonnet back into shape)
Wash and Polish
Headlight bracket  (scrappy)
New Decals
New speakers in front

Done: (13/05/06)
Fix rear window heater
Secured bumper
Connected up rear 6x9s
Secured radio with the cage.
Filled up brake fluid
Filled up engine oil
Washed car.
Fixed door as it was lying ~5mm to low and when it closed it would make a horrid noise. (used a jack to jack it up and let it bend it back into shape)
Pushed bonnet down, reshaped it as much as possible
Connected up bonnet leaver cable to latch.

So is the door re-allighned and the bonnet re-done?

Guessing the fogs are out and awaiting new ones :) Need to give it a complete clean down and T-Cut imo :) And some new De-Cals for the car and will look spot on :) I still want to buy it off you :)

All my parts are now on order and should be with me on Thursday, got friday, saturday, sunday off work to do all the major sickening work... Tracking is booked in at me local garage for monday once I got all the things sorted out and booking MoT in for Tuesday.

Get them daft looking alloys off there and put the original steelies back on.

Blasphemous.

youve got the front fogs in your list twice :p

and I bet we could do a better job on the bumper and bonnet too :)

edit: I wonder if we could change the bracket around so the bracked on the car came down inside the bracket we made ?  is easier than making a new one :)  (we kinda rushed it)

+ a bit of bending = perfect !

Get rid of the heavy alloy wheels, sell them if necessary, get steel wheels and spend the money on decent tyres rather than shiny wheels.

What sort of state are the hub bearings in?

Not to sure.

I dont know tbh.

Might get the steelies and just see which look better tbh. I want to have a car I like at the end of the day, but I will get the steelies eventually.

Any old PSA steel rims at all - you will probably literally be able to get given a set at anywhere that does alloys - customers who dont want their old wheels, and theyd just get scrapped anyway - then spend your dough on a good set of grippy tyres - youll thank yourself for it later.

Tyres are the most important part of the suspension - theyre the only point ofcontact that you have with the road.

Just ordered a set of Toyo T1-Rs for the Yaris, getting the budget CRAP off there early next week.

Its about time... think this is the longest time Ive kept the tyres of a previous owner on a car Ive had  must be nearly 2 months...

I just went to the local Pug dealer and asked them about my wobble at 50 problem.

They said it was the suspension hub and depending on the damage it could cost upto around £700 to fix

Im going to go over to some guys house from Rallye Register forums to see what he can tell me. Personally I have no faith with main stream garages but I was sick of being in the house.

I need a hug

wtf is a "suspension hub" ?

do you know if its front or back ?

only thing I can think "suspension hub" could be is your wheel bearings ?

£750 :o  you should have slapped him when he said that !

Well wobbling, could be track rod ends, just replaced myn and in the middle of also doing my CV Boot Ends... Its a bit of a job but im getting through it...

Replacing clutch in a few weeks, tempted to just throw it into a garage for that as I cant be arsed to screw on with the Gear Box etc for a new clutch :(

thats quite gay imho

the wobbling is life telling you to force through the harmonic velocity barrier
Title: Re:106 Rallye Progress thread
Post by: Mark on May 21, 2006, 17:04:37 PM
Hub bearings probably hanging out of it as well if oversized wheels were on it.

First thing Id look at if it was wobbling is if your wheels were balanced - wouldnt be the first time a garage charged someone £700 to balance their wheels and pretend they did something. If its not that and your hubs arent straight then there is still no WAY it will cost that much dough.

And you could replace your entire suspension for less than £700, and have good change out of it - another rip off merchant by the sounds of it. How much longer will these people get away with ripping people off like that.

What EXACTLY is it doing at 50? Is there an associated knocking?

If it was wheel bearings you would get whine rather than wobble, and it would increase in volume as you got faster - unless the bearings were collapsed. This is also highly unlikely as you would notice that at all speeds.

i was going to leave it to Mr.Roll to post, but he hasnt so Ill do it :P

planned on checking the handbreak to see what was wrong with it and look for the cause of the wabble at the same time... (handbreak was omming up 16 clicks)

found the problem with the handbreak right away... the guy who had it before Mr. Roll had left it standing a while, so the handbreak had siezed on, so he oilied the breaks... inside the drum :s

queue oil and gunk everywhere, i could turn the drum by hand even with Mr.Roll hard on the foot break, so cleaned that off with a bit of acetone (was going to use petrol but had some acetone so used it instead!)

handbreak problem was just a worn self adjuster and all the oil/gunk blocking it up and seazing it in place, fixed that no probs

when i took the other drum off the bearing inside fell appart as I pulled the drum off, looked pretty badly warn + rainbow effect of colours where it had been too hot :(

went for a new one but they guy wanted £35 and had to order it in :(   came down to £20 later on but still needed to order it in, so Mr.Roll is going to source one from his mate :)

so thats £700 he was quoted - £20 for the new bearing = £680 labour charges for me !

Got a new back box yestarday and fitted it as my old one, well it was so badly rusted it had came away from the pipe and I was running about without one.

So I got a new one from NPA Ltd for £33. Quik-Fit told me £53!

I did get one from a 1.1 106 from a scrappy for £10 but it had a different bore, I thought they might be all the same.

Front Brakes are going to get done tonight!

get them from somewhere that does alloy wheels - ppl often discard the steel rims there and then - if theyre 4 stud, they will be the same as 306, zx, xsara, etc etc - i wouldnt pay more than £5 each for them

To do:
Replace ball joints
Replace front discs and pads
Stop hand brake cable from sticking.
New OS rear wheel arch trim
Fix crack in bumper, or get a new one
Fix Bonnet (get a body shop to beat the bonnet back into shape)
Wash and Polish
Headlight bracket (scrappy)
New Decals
New speakers in front

Done: (May 06 to 12/07/06)
New Vacum pipe
Replaces NS rear wheel bearing
Replaced backbox
Fix rear window heater
Secured bumper
Connected up rear 6x9s
Secured radio with the cage.
Filled up brake fluid
Filled up engine oil
Washed car.
Fixed door as it was lying ~5mm to low and when it closed it would make a horrid noise. (used a jack to jack it up and let it bend it back into shape)
Pushed bonnet down, reshaped it as much as possible
Connected up bonnet leaver cable to latch.

From what I see on the roads, there are a lot more old french cars than old jap cars on the road.

Must have been a badly looked after 205, as the body is galvanised, as is the case with just about every PSA since about 1979.

Thats the car that gave hydropneumatic the bad name - as they chose the wrong sort of rubber for the seals. Was corrected back in the 50s but its stuck - bit like VW and the whole reliability thing that has stuck since the 80s but doesnt ring true any more.

We service a load of old 205s still from 1984, and the odd 505 from about 1980 all in cracking shape - diesel ones last forever

Alan you sexy guy, Ill need your welding expertise!

My car failed its MOT on:

-Loads oif bulbs and alignment of bulbs, got all or pretty much all that fixed.
-Nearside front lower suspension component mounting prescribed area is excessivly corroded
-Offside Rear parking brake no effort
-Emmisions. CO2 level was to high on fast idle. Was 0.62 and supopsed to be 0.30
-Nearside Rear suspension arm insecure
-Parking brake efficiency below requirements

Advisory:
Offside front anti-roll bar linkage has slight play in a ball joint
2 front tyres close to legal limit
Drivers door hinge insecure. (needs welding on the door I think)

I just passed my MOT on friday!

I paid £160 for the rear axel to be replaced, as I failed to do it myself.

The rear axel was pretty much better than mine too and cost me and extra £60.

In that £160 I also got new backing plates, hand brake cables and everything on the back sorted.

On the morning of the MOT I went to Halfords and got some Wynnes Oil treatment and fuel treatment at a total cost of £19.98 and put that in the oil and fuel tank.

Put a little bit of some syntehtic oil in too. As last time it failed it failed on the emissions so I think all this helped :)

So now all MOTd and also Ive found some guy whos going to sell me 3 arches with clips for my car. I only need one so its all good, at £15 each delivered.

Oh and thanks to Alan for the welding part!!
