Any one remember the post I made a while back about Audis new TDI turbo Diesel. It is a 5.5 L all aluminum bi-turbo 90Ã,° V12.  I for one was amazed at the specs and what they had built.

http://www.audi.com/audi/com/en1/experience/motorsport.html

Power     650 bhp / 485 KW
Torque    1100 Nm / 811 ft lbs
BHP/Liter    118 bhp / liter
Power to weight ratio    0.7 bhp / kg

They are looking to be the first team to win Le Mans 24 with a diesel powered car.  I say good luck to them.

Well, because guess what, they won their first race in style.  :D

Serious

Looking good for diesel power :)

Maldonado

:O!

awesome diesel-ness.

Badabing

Is there any actual advantage of doing this, (apart from possibly fuel efficiency? ;))

and showing someone off to be a rather clever engineer? (which they are and of which i approve!)

Serious

Obviously, yes, there is an advantage, it won its first race :)

redneck

its because vw are pushing an alternative fuelling policy atm. its easier to manufacutre bio-diesel than the petrol equivilent :)

Christopher Monkey

Read that as you can run a diesel on chip fat... or rape seed oil.... or sunflower oil.... etc

You can, but its illegal i think

Christopher Monkey

Its not.... you have to declare it to HM Customs and you pay a levvi on it.... but i dont think its excessive.... works out to 30p a litre as i recall

knighty

^^ 27p/litre ;)

same for bio too :D

Serious

It used to be illegal but providing you have the paperwork sorted and pay the tax then its OK. Someone else whos done it :)

1100 Nm torque is an advantage, makes it easier to keep a more precise speed.

Deaths Head

This makes me want to go to Le Mans again

I dont know anything about Le Mans - but surely the other cars arent turbocharged?

Didnt there use to e a turbo multiplier that said that a turbocharged engine had to be 1.4 times or something smaller than the n/a models?
