A couple of months ago the missus got an X reg SEAT Ibiza. Very nice little car.

My question is this; how easy is it to install a CD changer in a car? Im quite handy with most DIY style tasks so I thought it might be cheaper for me to do the work, although neither of us know much about cars (I cant even drive).

Shes owed a CD player from her insurence company from her previous car which was written off. Can she ask for a CD changer instead? The Ibiza has a non-standard radio/control facia, so its not a case of swapping the cassette for a CD. I cant seem to find a picture online, I can take one with my camera if you need a look at what it currently looks like.

Any help appreciated.

you can get fascia adapters from halfords. this will let you put a standard din headunit into the car.  if its anythink like its golf brother then its called double din. you can still get adapters, ive just had to do the same for my mitsubishi.  the stock radio only picked up radio 2 as its still running the japanese headunit, and that was double din to single din.

double din - excuse for a 3-gauge pod, and a carputer display

Okaaaaay, imagine I dont know what a CPU is.

Exchange the CPU for the headunit. Start again please. :)

*edit - The current fascia has a CD-Changer button, so I think its ready to take a changer, if that helps. Pressing that button does nothing atm.

youll need to get hold of an adaptor for the head unit.  Car Audio Direct should be able to help with that.  Theyll also be able to tell you which changers are suitable for your head unit.  http://www.caraudiodirect.com

Also, pass on my regards to your Good Lady, not spoken to her in months!

If you can get one with a USB port or memory card slot so she can listen to MP3s on long journeys, they are far smaller than CDs too.

If you get a carputer, make sure to get a mac, it will make you go 3 times faster

I think people are missing the point here, i too own an Ibiza atm, the Double Din head unit controls the aircon/heating in the car as well, so swapping it out will be a PITA, which is why i went for a Tape to MP3 converter for mine, its a far cheaper solution and no need to burn CDs, just play everything from your MP3 Player.

PS if your version of the headunit has a CD changer button it most likely has a CD changer input on the rear of the unit, all you would need to do is run a lead from the unit to the changer.
