OK, hows about a Reynolds 853 tig welded frame, in spectacular orange, for $400 (211GBP)?

Pah, Your just paying for a reynolds sticker.
:)
853 is some nice stuff, though its really meant for lugged frames. Those tubes are externally butted so they can stand being tigged. Under 5 pounds. Not bad at all. I know a guy on Usenet that built one up. Supposedly rides magically, but bb flex can be disconcerting for the heavy masher. Wouldnt bug me. Ive ridden uber stiff, and will gladly give up a tooth shattering ride, for a little springiness.

Can you say "eccentric bottom bracket"? 8)
I love the color matched pedals. :D Now that is pimp. Reminds me of that Dave Chappelle character, "I sprinkle diamond dust on my food, so my crap sparkles." :D

i owned a rock lobster xc bike a few years ago - f*cking magic...
If I cant have canti studs, Im taking my toys and going home. :P
They build an 853 version of that frame which retails for $1K. Not bad, but still some coin.
Heard some good stuff about Easton Ultralite, but Id rather try it on a road bike, than on something that gets bashed about.
The other one you posted looked the same TBH...

To the untrained eye. This one has a more modern top tube angle. Externally butted tubes, much nicer rear drops, fancier paint, different cable routing, and the steel is a fancier set of stoff, making the ride plusher, and the weight 0.5kg less.
;)
