I had half day today so ive been fixing the car - Megane 1997 (I crashed the van :( ).

Its been making a noise that gets louder as I go faster and sounds like a WW1 fighter plane shooting when I turn on full lock. I thought it was the exhausts back box as it was hanging off - so I replaced it myself today. The cost was £28 versus a £170 quote at the garage!
My problem is the noise is still there - although its more distinguished now. The back box was obviously adding to the overall din but not the whole problem.

Do you think my problem is a CV joint? Possibly both sides?

Im thinking of having a go again after work tomorrow but its looking like £30 per joint and a bitch of a job. I dont want to be in the situation of doing it and finding out its something like a steering rack. Ive had it up on the jack today and when I spin the wheel it seems to have a bit of play when I spin the wheel. Is it dangerous to be driving on screwed CV joints? I drive a lot!

Checked to make sure the breaks are backing off properly?  Had the same issue on the 19 when I had that, and it was the anti-rattle/retainer spring on the pads had broken meaning they had a habit of knocking against the disk.

Check my boots at least once a week due the amount of miles I do. Also check your wheel bearings.

play along the axis of the driveshaft? thats a bearing.

you usually know a cv boot has gone as it spits its grease out and youll often find it on the roadside face of the wheel. it gets everywhere and is nasty to clean off. if the cv is going its a humming which will increase with speed not revs. unfortunately cv and bearings sound similar when they go.

grab the wheel left and right and see if it wabbles, then top and bottom and try again.... its normaly to wabble a bit mroe left and right because of the play in the steering rack.... if youve not checked one before, the best idea would be to check them all and see how they compair ?  if one is much worse than the others its lprobably buggered :(

also... reach underneath and grab hold of the drive shaft neer the wheel end and jerk it around... see if theres much movement there.... then try the other end of it.... then trhy the one of the other wheel... see how they all compair (also try turning it a bit) - its normal for there so be some movement there... but not too much...

I dont think its a wheel bearing as the wheel is solid when I test it, i.e. no play when I shake the wheel. It makes the noise when I spin it tho and more so when its on full lock. The offside is deffo making more noise.

Ive also been to the local motor factors and I have to buy a drive shaft (they dont sell just the CV joint) for a Megane. Check with a garage and they said the same. It costs £57 each side :(

ROFLCOPTERS !!!

£57 for a drive shaft (with CV joint) is a BARGIN !!!!

Ive paid well over £150 in the past !

Binary Shadow

was £76 just for the CV joint on an old passat, sounds a bargain, think the inner CVs on the legacy were going for well over £110, sounds a bargain indeed.

For a cheap temp car off eBay its not as great as it sounds - looking to get stuck in on the weekend tho :)

Serious

I read the title and thought of someone making a reefer out of their CV :/
