DEViANCE

Couple of weeks ago I was going around a roundabout and all of a sudden the car understeered badly then oversteered badly and then all of sudden i got all the grip back and it flung me (near) side on into a very high curb, was doing about 30 so it was quite an impact.

Apart from wrecking my alloys I had a quick look and nothing was bent so I didnt worry to much about it, until it started making some funny noises last week.

When turning right i get a grinding and squeeling noise and when accellerating and braking and get a thud.

Jacked the car up this morning to have a look and there is playin the wheel side-to-side and up-and-down.
The side-to-side movement you can see 2 upper link ball joints(i think they are ball joints) (see pic) cracked and moving and applying the brake makes no difference.

The up-and-down movement doesnt involve the upper link ball joints and doesnt happen when the brake is applied.

The tracking is still spot on and set back is fine so nothings bent.

Im guessing that the 2 upper links need replacing and the wheel bearing, also the grinding when turning right sounds like cv joints taken some damage?

any ideas?

oh and my steering wheel is about 45degrees out to the left when going in a straight line, whats caused that and how do i fix it?

Cheers
Rob

get the tracking done as well, youll certainly have knocked it out.  After doing something similar myself I had to change out the wheel bearing, the ball joint and the bearing race in the top of the strut.

knighty

sure you havent bent a track rod ?

it would explain why the steering wheel is off at 45 to where it should be, and could explain the grinding (it would be running toe in a mile so the wheel is rubbing somewhere?)

check out the steering rod and see if you can see any damage... I had one once that looked fine but used to bend/bow in the middle as you turned the wheel... took bloody ages to find it... needed someone else to turn the wheel while i was underneath!

change the wheel bearing (might as well) and anything else that you can see is damaged and see what kind of difference it makes.... youll deffo. need the tracking checking again too!

Ive got a mate with a tyre place and got him to check tracking, set back and camber and it was all spot on so hopefully that means nothing is bent.

I was suprised when he said nothing was bent as the way the steering wheel is it must have done something to track rod.

was following the audi in the metro today and noticed the backend was dancing all over the road, had a look and looks like ive bent the rear axle  :whoops:
The near side rear wheel is pointing quite alot to the left, helps when going around roundabouts  :yarr:

crazylegs

that sounds pretty bad, any idea how much thats gonna cost to fix?

DEViANCE

no idea, cant find any replacement parts on the net and not even entirely sure whats damaged so gonna drop it in the garage for a quote tomorrow.

DEViANCE

looks like the rear axle come in one, very expensive looking, piece. (No. 12)

Mark

nows the time to buy second hand, and coilovers

Serious

Visit a few scrap yards and look for one thats been in a front end crunch. If you are lucky you will find one and the blokes might give you a hand removing the thing.

Beaker

These have always been good for me.

Local scrap yard, also another called Hills Motors @ Burscough near Southport.  They both have massive stocks of newish cars as well as older sh*t.

Chris

Aye, get to the scrappy and get a used one! Youll get butt-f**ked for new...

DEViANCE

£480 for a new rear axle kit from Audi Parts. Ill ring some scrappys tomorrow.

DEViANCE
