I thought the 4-5-1 worked ok, although "The Boy Rooney" was left unsupported a bit too often.
I am wondering whether it would be better to drop Lamp "most shots, no goals" ard, move Becks into the centre and play lennon up the right from the start.
Otherwise I think Svens seriously got to look at a 4-3-3 or 4-2-2 with either Crouch or Walcot playing off of Rooney. I guess that means Crouch then ;)
I thought we played much better. Reading The Sun, they reckon Carrick played crap. 5/10 rating they gave him. How wrong can they be? He had a blinder. He played the position better than Hargreaves did in the last game, and he played well.
However, you can tell that Hargreaves has possibly never played right back before. He did not defend well and was often well out of position. There was one bit where the other 3 defenders were in line with each other and he was a good 10 metre further up the pitch. A good side will attack him, ie Portugal.
Hopefully we can lift our game for Portugal, Ecuador were very disapointing. I expected alot more from them to be honest. They showed very little threat other than the chance on 10 minutes and that was because of a mistake from Terry. Amazing block by Cole, although he didnt play all that well, that block was worth him being on the pitch.
Worryingly, Sven has said he did not know Beckham was ill... Are they not speaking? I am surprised Lennon did not come on earlier, as soon as he did our attacks had purpose and we made more chances in the last minutes with him on than in the previous 86!
They should have given Theo a runout against Ecuador, at least to blood him. He is not going to play a single game this tournament!
I agree with you regarding Rooney being left alone. Too much long ball still. Either Gerrard or Lampard should have stayed closer to him and allowed the other to go back and help Carrick (if needed, which mainly he didnt since he played so well). With both are going back to help defend, Rooney became frustrated and towards the end of the 1st half he was coming into our half to get the ball!
We showed signs of playing well, its a shame it was in injury time!
I think it was a good performance yesterday. Very solid at the back except 1 or 2 mistakes by the full backs. Going forward wasnt very effective at all, i dont think the 5 in midfield worked very well, although we had alot of control in the midfield we couldnt get any decent attacking moves together.
Portugal are very beatable esspecially without deco and ronaldo. We have a very good chance of getting past them imo.
