wtf are they?

I seen a couple this week, normally a lane that runs up the left towards a roundabout but theyre gravel & come to a dead end.

for brake failures, just turn into them and you stop.

there mostly for big vans / lorries that aint going to stop in time

the ground is usually soft so the front wheels sink in and you slow down fast

havnt had to use one yet ! (touch wood!)

My dad used one yonks ago... needed to be towed out that one had soft sand. Vans tyres just sank straight into it.

We got them here on the way to Chattanooga.

I have seen paved ones, somewhere in the US forgot where, that goes in to an uphill to stop speed.

Should really be called "oh S**T! my brakes dont work, HELP! lanes

Wouldnt that just make it a ramp to jump over the obstacle? Bit drastic, but heck if your brakes fail, why not?
