a mate in work is having abit of a mid life crisis and has decided that he wants a fast, nice looking car for not much money, that is pretty reliable.
He has around Ã,£3k to spend and the insurance needs to be under Ã,£1k, he is 29 with full ncb.

He is looking at FTOs atm but they arnt all that quick and the insurance is mad.

obvisouly i sugested a Rover Coupe Turbo which fits the bill nicely, i also mentioned a Hyundi Coupe but they arent very fast at all. I was also thing maybe a Porka 944.

Anyone got any suggestions?

God Damn, Anythings gotta be better than the Rover Coupe Turbo.
Like a Yugo, or a Ssangyong.

Id be looking at something like an MR2-Turbo, or 200sx

The MX5 mentioned in Niges thread is a great choice, as its a blast to drive, but not an over the top hard to insure kinda car. AFAIK the MR2, while a great car in its own right, is much more dear to insure.

Edd

yea 200sx would be a good one, the mr2 turbo would be a bastard to insure cause its an import
u can pick up scoobys for not that much these days as well

Pete

MX5 aint that fast unless you go for the BBR Turbo (0-62mph: 6.8 seconds), I dont think youd get a good one under Ã,£3k. On the other hand a 1.6 (0-60 is like 9.5 seconds) is only grp14 insurance iirc, Ã,£450 fully comp for me, and Im 27.

FTO - I dont think the 200bhp of the mivec is bad at all, the one down from that is still 180bhp. I was thinking about getting one for a while but you cant get a nice one for much less than Ã,£4k and that much bhp means lots insurance. Even something like a clio williams is grp17.

Have a look on parkers.co.uk

I know sh*ts bad right now with all that starving bullsh*t and the dust storms and we are running out of french fries and burrito coverings.

Edd

plus the FTOs are only good if u get the manual version

Maybe in 1999 yeah, ive been insuring an mr2 turbo fine with absolutely no problems for over 3 years now (I was 22 when I first insured it)

200SX is the best choice here at the moment. A Scoobie is in the price range as well, next door neighbour got an imported WRX from Japan for Ã,£4,000 and it was absoloutly mint and totally original :)

Chuck Norris

Toyota celica GT4, Ex police S60/V70 T5.  Mitshubishi Galant VR4?

mr_roll

I didnt even think about the ex police S70s theyre pretty quick but if hes wanting somthing with a bit of street cred then a 200sx is the best option I think too.

DEViANCE

i think he is set on a fto, some how he managed to get a quote for Ã,£500

200sxs are nice but they are the car of choice for chavs round here, loads of them.

Thats a pitty, probably all of them have been drifted and screwed up.

Edd

i imagine ex police cars are also pretty f**ked

Depends, some of them arent used very much, just for tottering about in and transport. The front line cars can end up with a lot of misuse and damage but they are well looked after and maintained too.

Rather like ambulances or fire engines.

Edd

would you ever buy an ex royal mail van?
