to be fair, all modern diesels suffer from

- DMF failures
- MAF failures
- Injector failures
- EGR/DPF failures

Basically old mechanical diesel engines are far more reliable than modern machinery ever will be.

My van has done 145k (3 years old) and its only suffered from electrical faults, the only mechanical problem its had is when the previous driver didnt check oil and water daily.

Im remembering the 1.9 XUD I used to potter around in, and it was stupidly reliable.  By the time I had finished with it I had put 60k on the clock myself, and I bought it at 110k.  The 1.8 Ford POS Escort Van I had was similar, crap, no power, but it didnt break.

most new vans are a bit of a disgrace....

only mk5 transits (aka smiley front ones) were great... they ran forever, no matter what.... when they were getting old it wouldnt be abnormal for me to check them over and find there was no oil registering on the dipstick and no water in the header tank..... but they just kept running and running....400k miles on an engine was normal...

my mk6 transit (not the brand new just out ones, the ones just before that) needed 2 egr valves inside 50k miles - an egr valve change isnt the end of the world... but limp home mode when youre up in the hills of Scotland is!... then a new dual mass flywheel, and then then engine blew up...

my brothers van does a few more miles than mine do, hes hald 3 or 4 egr valves..... , the DMF and 2 new engines inside 100k miles

weve also got an old crapbox, a 1997 citron relay, the van is crap to drive - the steering wheel is at an angle, seats are crap, handling is crap - it rolls like a boar around the corners....  originally it was only kept as a backup van, for emergencys.... but its NEVER broken down... not once in 10 years and 150k miles

thing is.... cars/vans should be getting more reliable, not less... what really pisses me off is.... the car/van manufacturers obviously know whats going on, and are just building them to get through the warranty periods and don;t really care about anything after that ?

none of which are listed on the side of that van, so hes got a whole world of more trouble heading his way!

Agree on the old mechanical diesel reliability, my old 306 XLD did 60K miles in my hands (I got it at 110K) and never failed to start first time and get me to my destination. It had other problems by the bucketload, but the engine was never one of them.

How about VW Vans and transits ?

Knighty will be in shortly to comment on transits :P

the transits arent the worst.... but theyre still crap !

Im moving over to Mercedes sprinters now.... seam much better (only got 1 so far) but at least the engines are built to last
the ones I buy are a few years old, the engines they have are basically the same engine they were using 15 years ago with a few bits added on - common rail etc...

my uncle runs 8 bans, always buys new and only keeps them 5 years.... he used to use transits but swapped over to sprinters approx 7 years ago.... hes worked it out that hes about £15,000 a year better off in maintenance costs !

not sure about the smaller VW vans, but the VW crafter is just a sprinter with a VW badge on it ;)
