Title: Inquiry wants to see MoT tests cut to 2-yearly

QuoteInquiry wants to see MoT tests cut to 2-yearly

BRITISH MOTORISTS could save Ã,£465m a year if the frequency of MoT tests was cut to European levels, a report claimed yesterday.

Reducing the MoT test to once every 2-years is one of the recommendations of a government-commissioned inquiry carried out by Lord Davidson.

In the UK, new cars are required to be tested first after 3-years and then annually.

In Europe cars are tested after they are 4-years old and every 2-years from then on.The move is one of several recommendations to cut red tape which have been broadly backed by chancellor Gordon Brown.

Speaking to the CBI in London, Mr Brown said he was in favour of a system "with only a fraction of the forms, a fraction of information requirements, and a fraction of inspections needed."

:?  i see enough un-road worth cars about, it only takes 6months for a metro to rot to dangerous levels so this is just stupid imo

That is a total recipe for disaster. Introduce the MOT2 - that will ensure safer cars on the road, but the government would have to spend cash to do that.

Stupid idea, like Deviance ive seen some cars go from perfectly fine to downright dangerous in month, never mind years.

*Cue Mark telling up how MOT Tests are stricter in Eire* ;)

Not sure what the standard of the test is in Eire now (It just got introduced a few years ago - previously there was no test!!) since I live in Northern Ireland, but we have a pretty tough test

im thinking how i _just_ scraped through my MOT last week.  The mechanicals are all perfect, but i need a new Lambda sensor i think.  If it was left for 2 years its likely most of the poeple i know really would let their cars go to pot.

Im just imagining the state ball joints, cv joints, linkages, track rod ends etc would get into - all a BIG deal when they go wrong. Dangerous, and cheap thats what it is.

New cars shouldnt be an issue, but chatting to the mechanic at the garage when he was MOTing mine he said most cars he gets in on their 1st MOT seem to fail on either track rod ends or brakes.

its probably a ploy to get older and modded cars off the road tbh

Costs more money to maintain a modded car usually due to people hossing them and increasing wear on the thing...

I think every 6 months if a reduced cost was brought around would be all cool.. But getting booked into a MoT center is gonna be even harder :D Our local one has a 3 weeks waiting list at the moment :s

Solution: MOT every 2 years, emissions testing yearly.

We dont even do a analagous inspection to the MOT in this city. Just emissions. On the other hand, cops can pull over vehicles that have issues like missing bumpers or broken lights and cite them. Works out pretty well.

We dont have cops like that really.

I dont see whats wrong with the 12month test.

nor me 12 months seems ideal to me, any longer and fatal flaws can creep into cars, a lot of people just drive the cars dont have a clue whats going on underneath

I personally think 12 months is a good time and from next year I might get my MOT done every 4 months, just for a bit of personal assurance.

It would tell me somthing that might be amiss that I havnt seen and then may lead to another issue with my car. So it could save me money in the long run or warn me about things that are going to go wrong.

I think itd lower the price of cars too, if cars had "only 12 months MOT left on it" Its just stupid and they only say "save us money" as if they said oh, "it might increase deaths on the road by people having unroadworthy cars" it wouldnt go down to well.
