Do these things actaully work...or are they just a joke? If they do work what kinda difference do they make?

Poison_UK

Not a Joke but if you even think about putting one on its worth a few slaps around the face with a nice piece of trout...

They just fool the ECU into thinking theres more airflow than there actually is.  The engine then bungs more fuel in the cylinders, and so effectively youre running a richer mixture.  Which may net you a tad more power but really isnt too great for the car.  And your fuel economy suffers to boot.

How much is a tad?

If you get the one with the var resistor...what would you estimate the delay between adjusting the control and the car being more powerful be? I can see it could have its uses every now and again...and when you dont need the extra juice it can run normally...a bit like the M button in the BMW M5?

Edd

the M button in the M5 is a bit more advanced i think, like it changes the cam timings and raises the rev limiter
those resistors are a f**king bag of wank

I would guess at power increase being somewhere in the region of f*** all.  And it would sh*t on your catalyst as youd have lots and lots of unburned fuel pissing out the back.  As for delay, there wouldnt be one as any sensible ECU would monitor airflow in realtime.

It doesnt take much knowledge of thermodynamics to realise that anyone who does this is a retard.  The ECU is programmed the way it is for a reason, not because car companies feel stingy.

I expected responses like this....just making sure!

Surely itd also cause knocking in the engine...

With the spark firing sooner in the cycle, meaning that the piston isnt fully compressed at firing??

Or do I have the wrong idea about knocking??

Beaker

all these will do with putting more fuel into the cylinder without doing any other "proper" mods is wash the lubriation out of the cylinder over time.  The old one with pulling the choke out on the 1.0L metro made it go faster, but it siezed the engine after a while.

Ill sell ya some Manifold Magnets for only 69.99. Guaranteed to allow for tighter air molecule alignment!

They dont alter timing in the slightest on the majority of cars Id imagine.  I doubt it would pink either.

The nearest thing would be pulling the choke out slightly on an older car.
