I actually like these, I know it makes me an Old Man, but they are actually nice to drive.  You can tell BMW had some input.

cambelts due?

Ive been told by the seller they have been done, no proof though. dont know if I trust it.
Its is a £500-700 job.

Ive been poking around this afternoon and it does look like somework has been done around the cambelt area, clips/screws missing, non-oe cable ties been used etc

if the seller says it has been done, theyre lying. even if its someone you know - theyre lying

get it changed immediately.

first thing i always do with a second hand car.

Thats a somewhat sweeping statement.  Mine was done less 500 miles before I bought the car according to the service book and main dealer receipts.  Sometimes you have to accept things have been done.

Mark

I can get you main dealer stamps for any manufacturer in 24 hours to say that any work has been done.

I never trust anything a seller says - especially if it has just had a full english MOT.

Eg - the lotus excel SE I got recently from Hull.

It had a day old MOT. It was advertised as absolutely mint, and completely restored.

When I was going over it for its real MOT on Friday, I found the seatbelt mounting points on the body were so rotten, they came off in my hand. In effect, the front seatbelts were useless. Even a small impact and the mounts would have ripped off the body.

So can I, however if they produce a receipt and dont do the work they are guilty of outright fraud, and they would be charged with that if caught out.

I view anything a seller says with a pinch of salt, but there are some that arent too bad.  Last car I bought came with 12 month 3rd party backed warranty.  I was willing to give him plenty of trust at that point.  Its also the 3rd time Ive bought a car from the same dealer (my father is on his 4thh from there), and weve never been sold a pup.

Charles Hurst is about the biggest dealer in NI - theyre on the mainland too.

Theyve made the news several times for faking work, and they still do it. The penalties are too low.

eg: http://www.4ni.co.uk/northern_ireland_news.asp?id=63395

I am just sullied from buying from dealers and from going to see too many mint cars that are far from mint !

Liam

Mate you got a right bargain there!!!

When I got my current car from a dealer near where I work a few months ago it came with a full MOT done when I first purchased the car & got a service done. I believe that the service was genuine as the oil, filter was changed but also the brakes which was totally noticable. But the MOT makes me think a bit because since i have had the car, I have had to change one of the headlamps because it was massivly out of alignment & whenever i tried to align it myself with the top screw it was broken & the headlamp did not move no matter how much I turned the screw. Out of aligned headlights is an MOT failure from what I have been told. Also recently i have noticed that the rear end of my car seems to feel every single small bump / hole in the road & I have been told that its likely the rear axle bushes have gone & from what I have experienced with going over bumps & holes in my car and also whenever i get in / out of the car or someone gets in the back of the car / gets out, the car makes creaking noises that comes from the rear suspension area. Suspension bushes are an MOT failure too. Funny enough non of these issues did not seem to affect the cars MOT at all when it got done. The MOT cert says that an advisory noticed was issued as well but I never got one with the documents for the car. When I went back & asked the dealer he told me that its highly likely that the advisory was seen to / fixed during the cars service and thats the reason why I never got an advisory notice. From looking at the MOT cert for where the car had its MOT done im not suprised if they rushed the MOT lol!
