Mondeo's pissing me off - time to go. Want something fun. Looking at either Hyundia Coupe or maybe an MR2 Roadster. Would love an RX8 but too costly to run! Not a huge MX5 fan (shape just doesn't do it for me - I know they're great cars though). I did also look at the Celica but I've heard they're not the nicest drive?

Thoughts and suggestions appreciated!

I was going to suggest an S2000 as well, but given the budget I would say an MR2 is your most likely candidate seeing as you're not into the MX-5s. I don't know what they go for and they're probably over budget but have you considered the likes of the Honda Integra, Toyota Celica, Mitsubishi GTO, etc?

None of these namby pamby MR-S things.

Integra's are great, and I've definitely been looking at Celica's although most reviews say they're not much fun to drive.

MR2's I'd definitely be looking at the Roadster if anything - not as powerful, but plenty for how I drive and I much prefer the look. Need to keep in mind when I say something 'fun' I'm comparing that to a 2.0 Zetec Mondeo so it doesn't need to be a speed machine to beat that!

So far I haven't seen anything to touch the Hyundai Coupe 2.0 for the price range - going to test drive one tomorrow but all the reviews and some friends who have owned them speak positively.

Don't know much about FSO/GTO - don't suppose the MPG is up to much

If you're buying a car like this I wouldn't ever expect much out of the MPG whatever you choose, I'm lucky to get 30mpg out of my MX-5 and if I put my foot down I can practically watch the fuel needle move.

Haha no I know! Not looking for awesome mileage or anything - but I want to about match 35 that my mondeo does though - Roadster, Celica and Coupe are all in that ballpark.

I've got an MR2 roadster, not the fastest thing on earth but loves being thrashed, although really doesn't like the damp, partly to do with the cheepo tyres fitted to it (not by me) and partly to do with the engine being in the back! Just be warned when it goes, it's a difficult beast to recover. There's a pic of mine in the car photo thread.

I also had the older shape mondeo tdci which was chipped and very quick, but picking up a newer shape one on Monday for my work motorway cruising to replace the old one, will keep the mr2 for a bit of fun though as always puts a smile on my face when it hits 4k rpm

Audi would be my number 1, the Prelude are fast but thirsty by todays standards, the 206 another fast motor but small space, and for your budget pick any MK4 flavour of the Astra whether you want a 3 Door, a Coupe or a Convertible in the Turbo.

You can get a very nice Mitsubishi FTO for £2,500.  You'd be looking at a top spec GPvR/GP version R too.

Very nice cars to drive, albeit, front wheel drive.

On long haul motorway journeys I can get 40mpg from mine.  To and from work which is 10 minutes each way, more like 25mpg.

I'd personally steer clear of Hyundai Coupes.  Pretty low tech engines and suspension setup.  Not supposed to be a very good drive.  Heavier than all your 90s Jap counterparts.  Also, only 160~bhp from a 2.6 V6, and less than 120bhp from their 2.0l ones!!  That's poor when you consider you're in the 200bhp ballpark with a 2l V6 FTO or a Integra/Celica.  You should be thinking Jap only

Apart from looking nice thats it, the 1.9 is rather slow.
