Firstly if I sound stupid - bear with me! I know NOTHING about cars at all.

On the way to work this morning I tried to go into 4th but it crunched. Tried it a couple more times but I couldnt get into 4th. By that time I had reached the juntion and went down the gears, 3rd and 2nd were fine. In 1st gear I had barely any power. I crawled off the roundabout and just managed to get up into 2nd which was fine then went back up through the gears which were all fine (including 4th) . Got to work at the end of that road and had to go back into first which was fine - I then parked using first/reverse without any problems. Now maybe I just f*ed up my attempts at moving to fourth and failed to use the clutch properly when in first but Im a bit worried about what it could be. Not looking forward to the drive home tonight. Does this sound like a standard problem or anyone have any ideas?

Cheers

Not a standard problem.... Is it taking a while for power to cut in? What kind of a car is it and how old is it and how long ago did you have it in for any maintanence?

Binary Shadow

could be gear linkage or even worn engine mounts or clutch if its not disengaging fully it will be hard to select gears

Its a rover 414 L reg. It had a service last May for the MOT (Ive only had it 3 months).

Its not taking a long time for the power to cut in - it just seemed to have no power that one time. Like I said once I got off the roundabout it was fine which is whats making me think maybe it was my imagination but it was weird and bloody scarey creeping along on this huge busy roundabout. I guess Ill just have to see how it goes on the drive home then get it serviced ASAP.

if the clutch is slipping it might cause issues with power but i dont know rovers.. for good reason ;)

Rivkid

thanks for the advice. Hopefully itll see me through this week - as of Friday Ill have a list to and from work will be ok while it gets fixed/replaced lol!

I know Rovers are the most unexciting thing ever but I must admit I do enjoy driving it - I think because its a challenge lol!!

If its hitting that point in a clutch life then I would suspect you have a week left, just dont put to much pressure on the clutch and no pulling away with very high revs. Just drive with in low rev levels and not jamming the clutch in and out and things will be fine till you get it in the garage :) (p.s. dont blame me if it just suddenly dies hahah)

Rivkid

Im screwed! The car always revs out like mad you cant help it! The clutch doesnt bite till its practically at the top and the accelerator is as sensitive as hell! Even my dad revs it and hes been driving for 40 years. Well I just hope it gets me home tonight because I have a wedding to go to .

Cheers fot the help guys!

thatll be a good indication that the clutch is on its way out pal if its not biting til the top of the travel

Agreed :)

A clutch kit is cheap. Doing the work is a pain in the arse... Well it was on the 205 :) But doing the clutch your self if you know what your doing is meaning you can set it up how you like it :)

DEViANCE

sounds like your clutch is on its last legs, my 214 went for 18months like that tho. Can be annoying tho, esspecially because of how revy the k-series is.

Not sure about your problems getting into 4th tho, see how it goes and if you keep having trouble it could be worn gear linkage like binary says.

Edd

synchro could be on its way out too?
